I have been told to throw out the head bolts and use new units when it comes to torque to yield spec`s.

In the middle of the 94 head job and feeling a little uncomfortable with the second 90 degree pull, pretty sure it is just my lack of expierence and all will be well.

Should I replace the bolts?

I reused my bolts and a few felt "soft" during that second turn, like something gave way and it got a little easier. 35k later and the truck is still running though.

Thanks, went around the corner and spoke with some mechanic friends, they told me the same thing.

Funny thing, 29pnd pull easy, first 90 OKay, second 90 real hard to pull.

Thats just me overthinking things.

I have done lots of these with no ill results with using the same bolts as long as they look fine with no pitting, all the same length. Several engines with over 100k miles and still going strong. I also usually torque to 35 on the first pass, I always run a thread chaser first to make sure all is ok in the hole. No problems to date with what I do. later robbie

Same here. Some felt different from others. No problems yet (8k miles).

So you do.... 35pnds 90 90?

Anyways, its done and I should pull off the coveralls and call it a night.

Thanks very much for the much needed reassurance.

Yep 35 the first pull, it may not seem like much but Hey, I have always used a little more torque then specs with all the engines I have ever done, never pulled a hole or broke a bolt yet (knock on wood). I was scarry the first time I did a 1FZ also(it was mine) and it felt like I was going to brake something. The second time around was easier. later robbie
