I'm going to do exhaust on my FJ60 and I'm looking for ideas on what people have done for exhaust on their FJ60s. I've got to keep my CATs and mufflers, so I can't just run straight pipes. But, I'm curious to see what others have done!!! Thanks!

.

Coming down from the Rams horn headers, crossover from the passenger side over to the drivers side to a "Y" and than went with one pipe to the cat. Used 3" exhaust pipe.

One other issue, may be minor. The smog ref may want that "Y" to be close to the cat. Mine is about two feet away and it was noted.
.

Off the AA headers I used 2.5", wrapped the passenger side around the front of the oil pan to the drivers side, and ran the two into one 3.5", and the straight and then a muffler and out the back. Routing a true dual exhaust gets to be complicated with how our trucks are, so the single is probably the way to go. I could easily put a cat in between my Y and muffler, as my muffler is almost in the stock location. I can take some pictures in the light tomorrow, but I think there are some in my build thread in my signature.
1976 TLC, did you get away with only one cat in cali? I seemed to think you needed both. using one would be much easier then squeezing 2 in there.

no good pics but here goes:

Rams horn manifolds :

Drivers side runs bascially straight back to stock muffler location where I have a dual in dual out 2.5 (I htink its 2.5 or 2.25) single large muffler. Passenger side runs from manifold back to rear of transfer case, crosses over the rear (just behind) the trasnfer case to the drivers side where it mates with the muffler.

From the muffler on pipe runs out and exits behind the left tire, other pipe run out and exits behind the passenger side rear tire. Spare tire mount removed.

I use a Magnaflow muffler..and I'm not running converters..but thats just me.

I know I need to use 2 cats on my setup. The 2007 5.3L engine that I'm using has both cats in the exhaust system. I would like to use 3" pipe for each side...Things are just a little tight on the passenger side between the transfercase and the frame rail.

I would go with 2.5. I dont think 3" would make that much difference...(other than the cool factor)
Get a high volume muffler.
I got a Magnaflow two pipes coming in and one going out on the driver side.....
I double wrap my exhaust (didn't have to) to minimize heat on the passenger floor..
Check out the pics on my build....
I got my frame off of the rig and shows how the pipes were routed..
Let me know if you want me to sent yah any pics...

Alright guys. I've had it!! I'm going down to Ed Hanson's Muffler shop in Spring Valley to see what he can do for me. If you can hear something growling and sputtering tomorrow morning, it's only me driving OPEN HEADER to the muffler shop!!!

Exactly what I will do when I swap to a V8.

For exhaust on a V8 swap in Cali, just make it legal. Save money for the Long's you'll need after the HP gain.

3" per side is too big for your displacement. BT, DT. Makes the thing louder than no exhaust! Might sound cool at first, but 6 hours into the drive to Utah.....

So, I've dropped off the truck for custom exhaust at Ed Hanson's Muffler. Great guy. Seems pretty knowledgeable.

The shop is going to tuck the stock 5.3L donor vehicle cats under the manifolds (in front of the tranny crossmember) and add dual 7" round x 27" long mufflers towards the back. Exhaust exit will be behind the rear wheels and have rectangular tips.

2.5" exhaust diameter. It will be CA legal...at least the exhaust part anyways...we'll see about the rest.

I'm pretty excited...I'll post pics when they're done!

exhaust

found this pic...shows the tail pips to some degree.

Thanks Elbert. I think I see some exhaust routing over the drive shaft up near the transfercase. How was the clearance for the exhaust pipes on that side?

yes..the passenger side exhaust pipe rums from manifold..down the frame rail to just the rear of the transfer case then it crosses over the drive shaft, just to the rear of the TC where it then joins/mates with the dual in dual out muffler. Its fairly close...you just don't have many options.

I asked my muffler guy to make it work, stay away from the fuel lines, to keep the muffler and pipes from below the frame rails (where possible) and this is what he did.

Other guys have run their passenger side pipe up under the oil pain and then merge the driver side with the passenger side into a singple pipe, then to the muffler and then out the back.

If I have to do any major work to the trans or TC...most likely the exhust will have to be cut.

exhaust

I found this other pic too... hard to get the perspective but you can see the passenger side exhaust pipe that crosses to the rear of the TC.

Here you go. Ed Hanson in San Diego is amazing. I hope you guys like!

It was tight fitting the cats in there. They are very close to the fuel and brake lines that run on the passenger side frame rail. I'm probably going to move the lines to the other side of the frame just to be safe.

Incredible work and attention to detail. Best of all the exhaust is pretty discreet. I know there are chrome tips, but the entire exhaust hugs the lines of the truck and tucks in really neatly. You can't really tell it's there. Wow!
