Nice work! How did you pull that off?

He's an 84 snob...(but even I'll admit, 82 isn't "late vintage")

Hey... a late 83 will do. I'm not that discriminatory for gawd sakes.

If I was looking for a project I'd go or that 82 in a heart beat.

What is the difference between the 82,83,84 BJ42's that you guys are so particular? Is it the 5-speed transmission? Is there a manual/power steering difference? Just the rarity? If it were me, I'd just look for one with the least rust, and swap the mechanical bits over that made the rig the way I want it. Can a 5-speed from a 60 series be used in a 40 series?

Differences are the 5speed, PS, and the dash is a bit different. Nothing really all that spectacular. Thing is I'm not into a project right now. So if the perfect one came along I'd pull the trigger.

One can use a BJ60 5speed, there is some fiddling involved with bell housings and cross members.

If I built one I wouldn't start with an overpriced CDN 42 (not that the red one for $6500 is overpriced). I'd go south of the boarder, get the oldest, cheapest, rustless FJ40 I could find and then gather the bits and pieces to build what I want. I really like the older 40 series because they have so much more character and the older something is the cooler it is gets day by day. Thing is, thats whatcha call a project.... and I'm not into that right now.

Thanks for the explanation; I get where you are coming from now.

So if I finish my '73 FJ40 with a 13bt, 5 spd, f & r full floater, arb's. 4:88's, dual tanks, gigglepin dual motor 8274, rust free, that's sort of what you are looking for?

Ya, sounds like a super cool rig. If I built a 40 series it would be pretty darn close to stock. With the 4.88:1 gears she's going to be geared a little low for hi way cruising though. Unless of course you plan on running 38" tires.

personally they don't hold much attraction for me over an earlier 42.

The dash is meaningless cosmetics (and kinda ugly) and the power steering system is a s***ty cobbled together p.o.s. used so they could cheap out and use the same linkages etc as a stock 40, with all those tre's and the stupid centre arm.

considering they're generally twice the price, it's a lot to spend for a 5 speed

Plus with the old ones , there's freedom to do whatever you want to them without the weight of the purist snob's disapproval bearing down on you every time you change something.

I thought about going to check it out this weekend, but honestly, it's kindof astounding how much free time I have these days with no cruiser to constantly need attention.

My intention is 37's, Not sure about the 38's or not. Will be an end of project decision. I have the wagon for longer trips, so this one will be more of a entertainment rig. But it will ooze stock, Not going to be a buggy. Just big tires.

This... there is something I hate about having others tell me what to do with my truck. I don't really see any appeal in a "stock" old truck considering what I want...

If I got a stock 84 the first thing I would do would be drop the steering for a sag system. Then a Turbo. The second thing would be to figure out the best way to piss off the purists... perhaps a SOA or a more mild lift 4link rear (something not too high but comfortable to ride around town) Followed by new seats... prob the same BMW ones I have now.:flipoff2:

Also considering the work to swap a 5spd + 3B into an FJ that's the route I'd go... if you buy them together its pretty simple.... It took me about 1 month to convert mine working weekends + nights after school. If I did it again I think I could do it much faster having already figured out the pieces.

I do see an appeal in pissing off purists though!:flipoff2::beer:

So... Its a 45 with a ford box?

Yeah, I have a 60 ps setup in a box in the goat barn, so there's really no point in an 84 for me.

I don't really want a project at the moment either, but I have to factor in aluminum tub into any 40 I look at....that whole little bit pregnant thing again.

I think it's just a 42 with a 45 cab. He's been trying to sell that for years.

Ford box would be gone pretty quick if I had that. maybe for one of the newer 75 pickup boxes.

At least the price has gone down on that 45.. He was askin 9 last summer if my memory is correct....
