I'm looking at replacing the tires on th BJ74. It currently has a set of 33x10.5x15 BFG M/T's on it. From the research I've done so far it looks like choices in this size are a bit limited, and I do not really want to go wider to a 12.5" wide tire. I would also like to replace it with another agressive tire.
So far my choices appear to be the following:
BFG M/T's - Costco has the best price at about $247 a tire installed + tax.
Toyo open country M/T's - A local tire shop has priced these at about $349 + tax installed.
The third option I have found is through tirerack.com for BFG KM2's which look a bit more agressive than the regular M/Ts. They would be about $260 per tire shipped. But I would still have to pay someone to install them and who know knows how much for brokerage ect.

Does any one have any experience with any of these and have any recomendations. I am open to other brands if they come in this size also.

Thanks

Hi guys, I have a set of BFG muds KM2 255/85/16 on my BJ74 and it rides really well. this is an E rated tyre, so I think it's a stiffer tyre than a C rated one. The truck handels better on corners, [no over steer, less roll ] than when I had All Terrain 32/11.5/15 on the truck. Also on the plus side you can do 100km at 2000rpm, saving fuel and engine life. They cost 140 euros plus tax at 13.5% each fitted and balanced.

I have the Toyo M55s (255 85 R16) and the MTs (same size) on my 70 series and I like both of them, though they each suit different types of terrain and use.

I am not a big fan of BFG, in fact I kind of hate them, so I'm going to suggest the Toyo MTs. You don't mention your location, but you should be able to get a better price than $349 each.

I quite like the look of the KM2s, but I just am totally unable to bring myself to buy another set of BFGs. The Toyo MTs are far quieter and smoother than previous versions of the BFG MTs.

Hi John, BFG KM2s are noisey for the first week or two at speeds of 90km plus. Once the sharp edges of the threads are blunted they are fairly quite. But not as quite as ATs. 159 euro is about $223 US dollars.

I am encountering the same challenge in finding 33's for a 15 inch rim. BFG lists 9.5 and 10.5 wide AT's, but they both are currently unavailable (in the SE US that is) and the next production run is unscheduled.
The best quotes I have gotten are at the local Costco
for the AT 33x9.5 R15 $175 per tire including taxes, all fees, mounting & balancing
for the AT 33x10.5 $185 per tire (same criteria, except Costco will not mount them so I will do it myself and the price will drop to $180 per tire)

Again, the problem is these tires are currently not available and I have not been able to find alternates in these sizes. So until I find an alternate brand with this size, I am stuck waiting for the next BFG production.

I am glad that I am not the only one searching for tires of this size.

Hi All:

Consider the Interco Super Swamper line. Lots of different tires depending upon how hard-core you want to go.

SS-M16 | Interco Tire

The TRXUS MT might work for you.

Best off road tires PERIOD

COOPER DISCOVERY STT

quiet on highway while doing 110km/h or 70mp/h
dont pack with mud

these tires are awesome on the highway

even better on the trail

for 315/ 75 R16 $320 bucks installed and balanced

hahaha, I dont know if they are the BEST out there... maybe for the price, but they aren't the best!

I wish I could get those cooper stts in 255s.
For the amount of work I have to do to fit 35s I just don't need it.

I'd recommend the Toyo Open country MT's I have them in 35x13.5R15 amd really like them, much quieter than my Maxxis bighorns. Offroad the toyos work pretty well, just they need to be let down pretty low (12psi in sand, 15psi everywhere else I found worked well) to get them to bulge. they have very VERY tough sidewalls.

I'm running 265/75/16 M&S and 235/85/16 AT on Toyota steel wheels. Same diameter, with a 10% correction for speed and odometer as compared with 15" stock. The 10% overdrive is perfect for 100kph cruising. Excellent ride in all conditions. There is a much wider variety of 16" tires available as compared with 15".

tires are as personal as the truck they go on.
Toyo - love them
BFG - garbage
Michelin - like them
Dunlop - like them
Good year - like them a lot
Swamper Truxus - nice when new, work well and handle nice. sell before they get too worn down though.

personally, i like having a nice quiet street tire and a very agressive bush tire.
