If everything pans out as planned, I'll be picking up a 93 Cruiser that is in decent shape overall but will need tires soon. When I had my 83 LC, I have a Deutsch Tech (I think) 3" lift on it w/ 33x10.5 R15 tires on it and it was great. I don't plan on lifting the 80 right off the bat, gotta make sure all PM is taken care of first. Should I go with 33x10.5 r16 (or metric equivalent) or go w/ a 33x12.5? Normally I'd just go w/ the 10.5 but I worry w/ the weight of the 80 (and the fact that it is a fantastic sail in a crosswind) I will need the extra width of the 12.5. I don't plan on doing much "muddin'" so it'll mainly roads, trails and some rocky stuff. Thoughts?

i would go with the 10.5. I have them on mine and know many people run those as well and they preform great. My pig is loaded up to about 6500 lbs and it runs great on 33X10.5 BFG ATs load range E.

Your '93 depending location (IIRC) will most likely come with 16" wheels; factory or not wheels to clearance the 4 disc brakes in a nutshell. A good tall skinny tire would be the 255/85/16 in theat case. A lot of folks have just skipped up the ~35" 315/75/16. Both will fit until lift is added... with some minor rubbing with the larger.

As all things YMMV. Just my .01 cents

Thanks guys

Another thing, how will the stock gearing etc handle 35's? Will I need to regear? Will I start breaking stuff? I know its possible to break things w/ stock tires but, I am rather cautious when wheeling/

Not a problem. The drive trains on these things are very over built. 35s push you up ~one gear. Take off is subdued, otherwise it drives normally.

"Take off is subdued...." aka SLOW?;)

I'm not expecting stellar gas mileage to start with but how bad will 35's make it? Sorry for so many questions but I don't want to spend $1,000 for tires and regret my decision.

my first upgrade set was 30570r16 tires. These are the 33" tall , 12.50 wide equivalent. Ran fine with stock gearing.

I run 285/75R16 (33x11/r16 more or less) as do a lot of other folks, I would speculate that it is the most common non stock tire size for 80's.
It looks good on a non lifted 80 with no rubbing and still looks good with up to a 2.5" lift. Any more than that and they will start to look smallish. Here are a couple shots with my 285's before my lift.

Riceburners they're not, but I'm okay with that.:meh::steer:

You have to remember, your odometer will be 13-14% off. Otherwise, you'll freak the first time you fill up. Once you do the math, mileage is not much different.:meh:
