I'm looking at 17x35s for a lifted fj 60 but I'm getting the idea that a number of experienced people think that 15 x 33 is better if you're not going to do extreme rock crawling. Drive train will be an ls3 with automatic. 3.7 axle, Arb air lockers. Opinions?

Seth,
I almost asnered from your response, but I'm going to have a 40 for the rough stuff. Just looks like a lot of people go with the 33s on the 60. Going to have a v8 so power isn't an issue. Drivability is the question?

Possible clearance issues with front fender with 35" tires. I run 285/75R17 Toyo MT's, just about
34". I run 3.73 axles as well with a 12HT. You are fine with the LS3 for sure.

I had 33 x 11.5 x 17 and they were great on road, so-so in rocks. 33 x 15 having more sidewall, would be better aired down. If it' an exposition vehicle, I vote for 17".

sua = 33's or smaller.

soa 35's or bigger.

I've been running 33's with a OME lift for years. Perfect for an expo rig.

I decided on BFG LT235/85R16s for my '86 FJ60 with 4.11s (axles from my '89 FJ62), 3FE (from my '89), and H55f. I went with an OME suspension and 70-Series Land Cruiser wheels. The tires are about 32" tall, roughly the same as the BFG 33X9.50R15s (which are NLA) I run on my stock '84 FJ60.

This is the same as my troopy with the H55F and 4.11. All round ,its the best you will get.

do you have a pic of your 60 with these tires and setup? I have an FJ62 so same drive train and gears you describe, I also have an H55f swapped in place of the original auto. I've considered getting these rims from Onur but wanted to see a pic.

thanks bud. good pics give a great idea of what it'd look like.

The consensus seems to be that moving away from a 15" wheel is smart as tire availability is becoming more difficult. 17" seems to be a good spot to land, regardless the diameter of tire you settle on.

I second moving away from 15" wheels. Tire availability is a problem and will only get worse. I snagged some 16" Wheel Vintiques steelies that fit great. I went with some 255/85r16 BFG Mud Terrains for that pizza cutter look and I don't do any rock crawling so wide tires are strictly needed. The set up sits well on my OME lift.

Coming from an 80 series where 35’s is the norm, 33’s are about right for a 60. I have 33x10.5 on stock rims and now that I am used to it, I love it

Tell yourself this if that’s what you need to justify your wheel purchase, but 15” tire availability is hardly a problem.

Yea? Find me a 33" tire on a 15" rim narrower than 10.5"...

It's not that you can't find 33" tires for 15" rims. It's that the selection is limited. Widths are 10.5 or 12.5 (I think Toyo makes a 13.5?). I wouldn't worry about ongoing availability in the near term as I'm sure BFG will make a 33x10.5x15 for a good long time but moving to 16" wheels opens up metric tire sizes to better select the exact size you want and is a future proof decision.
