I have been doing a lot of reading in preparation for the purchase of new tires.

I see that the largest recommended size for a stock rig with 16" rims is 285 /75 / 16. However, I like tall skinnies. I want 255 / 85 / 16s. There are very few manufacturers that make these in a tread pattern that I would want.

The BFG KM2s sound good except for some negative reviews on ice and snow.

The Coopers don't float my boat.

The best option seems to be the Toyo Mts - E load limit, (assumed) Q rated for speed, and in 255 / 85 the block spacing narrows up such that it looks more like an aggressive AT tire. Downside is 60# per tire and cost.

That said, GY Dura Tracs seem to be THE aggressive AT tire from what I have read. I love the siping and block spacing. However in order to get max height I need to go 285 wide. The DTs in 285 weigh in at 54# per tire.

I am looking for counsel on real world impacts to a MY2k Lx470 (all stock) with an extra 24# of rotating weight really means as far as milage / braking / driving characteristics.

I am also looking for counsel on pizza cutters (10.2") vs 285s (11.5") with the stock weight of the vehicle and light to medium loads.

Driving conditions:

Pac NW - some snow (packed and powder), not much ice, rain, dry pavement, fire roads, washed out / rutted out trails. 75% street / 25% out and about.

TIA

I'm going to bump this because I'm a huge fan of the tall skinnies as well. If I can say one thing about the KM2s on ice it's that they're not bad, but I did feel that I had to be careful. However, no more so than on highway treads and care in snow and ice is always in order. I owned a set of 33/10.5s too, so they were the same kind of tall skinnies we're talking about here - don't let the snow and ice reviews sway you, IMO.

i have 285/65-16 DTs on my Cruiser and 33x12.5-15 Toyos on my Pickup - though they are on a 16" vs 15" wheels they are pretty much the same height and their widths are appropriately different according to their specs. both are FANTASTIC tires IMO and I'm not sure how you could go wrong with either one.

as for the impact on your rig, you will definitely see a decrease in acceleration, MPGs, and braking. Bigger rubber is inevitably going to tax all of that stuff. Toyo MTs are known to have some of the thickest/most protruding sidewalls out of all the MTs on the market - which is why they weigh so much! I think a pizza-cutter tire is a smart choice.

as for ice/snow i wouldn't worry too much either since the Cruiser is full-time 4wd and has all the electronic junk to keep you safe - it's not like driving a part-time rig on ice with a lunchbox locker that likes to kick in at the least opportune time :) also, there is the option to have MT tires siped for extra traction at the expense of them wearing faster.

I"ve never owned the toyo's, but I've run a dozen different types of tires over the years on my Cruisers, and I gotta tell ya, I 've been running the Duratracs for about a month now and they are proly the best tire I've ever owned, and they are the best of both world's, great on the street and offroad! I run them on my 200, mine are super narrow, I didn't go super narrow, but a bit less than stock, I got the 275's!!!

I have the Toyo MT in 255/85-16 and they are simply amazing off-road. They grip like a mad man!

However, I really don't like them on road. If I used my truck like you do, I would never buy them. They are noisy, rough, keep going out of balance (last part is probably my fault for off-roading like a crazy and chunking them).

If it wasn't for the cost, I probably would have went with the Toyo M55 to get a little better road manners.

The 255/85-16 works and looks great with the 100 too IMO.

FWIW, I had to live with Toyo M/Ts for 3 yrs before I could finally sell them. IMO they were only slightly better than Pro-Comp tires. In other words, they suck. They beyond suck... I HATED them. Every time I wheeled they got worse. Every time I drove on pavement, they were louder. The only "good" thing about them is they wore like iron. The bad thing about that was I hated the tire so much I wanted them to wear out!

On the flip side, I love my Duratracs and will be buying another set.

Quick update, I am still shopping but have crossed the Toyo MTs off the list due to poor general performance (even if the middle is sipped) compared to the M55, AT2, and DTs.

I have been quoted:

$1,050 for 4 DTs (285/75) mounted
$1,149 for 4 AT2s (285/75) mounted
$1,289 for 4 M55s (255/85) mounted

I have not looked that hard yet, but the best I have seen thus far on line

M55s delivered - $1,328
AT2s delivered - $902
DTs look like they are going to be high $800s / low $900 delivered

The local shops are talking about pretty big mileage margins between the DTs and the Toyos. In all likelihood I will buy Toyos local. The big question is M55 or AT2? My head says buy the AT2, I still think I 'want' the M55s.

Thoughts?

This is an interesting thread. I am also considering new tires and am a fan of the "tall skinny tires." Are the DTs not available in a 255/85?
With regard to the the AT2 tires, are you referring to the Michelin or Generals? I've run the Michelin AT2s on my 06 Tacoma and absolutely loved them....very acceptable off and on road with very little noise, but they don't look nearly as aggressive as some of the others mentioned (likely due to the fact that they own BFG IIRC).
I'll be interested to see which way you go.

I too am looking for tires and am going to the 100s in the hills so I'll be able to see what size looks best to me. I have 33x10.5x15 bfg mud terrains on my 4runner and love them. 12.5 width doesn't start looking proportional until the tire is at least a 35 IMO. I like the way the tire looks on no-pistons truck above at 255/85-16. It's hard to compare sizes on a tire on 18's like on Kreitens' 200 series because there is just so much less rubber. I prefer the 16" rim for our trucks when they are fitted with more aggressive tires until the tire size nears a 35 then the 18s look pretty good too. my opinion of course

I couldn't agree more with this, that's exactly how I feel too. I'm interested to see which way the OP goes.

I'm going to assume you're referring to the Toyo AT2s and thus interject my opinion that they would be a fine choice. I'm not a fan of skinny tire, nor am I a fan of wide tires. I'm a fan of tires that "look right". And IMO a 255 in the big wheel wheels of a 100 Series doesn't look right. That's all personal preference though...I actually went with the 295/75/16 AT2 and for me, they are perfect. They fill out the wheel well in width, while still being completely covered by it. The 295 is one of their "Xtreme" sizes with larger lugs/voids so it's plenty aggressive. They ride and drive great still. They are like 64 lbs a corner, and I can notice the power drop, but it's quite acceptable. I'm pretty sure stop and go mileage is adversely affected, but I basically saw no difference in highway mileage at and below 70mph. I got right at 17 before the swap and after in those conditions. Just took a 2300 mile trip and averaged 15.9 overall...not Prius numbers, but have no fears that a semi aggressive 285 AT is going to drive you down into single digit mileage on the highway...

I have Duratracs on my Jeep...and have no complaints about them either. They are more aggressive that the Toyo AT2s, have worked well offroad and are wearing well on the super light XJ. The price difference was to much for me though, especially when I didn't need quite as aggressive of a tire for the LX, which will spend most of it's time onroad...

...I actually went with the 295/75/16 ...
I plan to check out that size also I certainly am not set on the 255.
these three sizes are all interesting. obviously there are "same size" differences between brands
nice to have so many choices in the 16" rim size.
255/85/16=33.1x10.04x16
295/75/16=33.4x11.61x16
285/75/16=32.8x11.22x16

Jhorn - AT2 = Toyo. Also DTs do not come in either 255/85/16 or 295/75/16.

Codertimt - thank you for the feedback. Is your truck stock or lifted? Do you have a pic of your block spacing?

I will probably keep my Hankooks on for a few more weeks, but it will definitely be one of these three tires. I will say this - I've had a lot of Toyos on a lot of vehicles and never been disappointed.

Thank you

ETA - NoPistons - thank you for the pic. I think 255/85 look great!

My Michelin's have been wearing super well, but I recently took a bolt in one of my tires which rendered it unrepairable. I put the spare on, but am now down to just the four. The guy at Les Schwab said that the tread was fine, but that the tires are old and starting to crack just slightly on the sidewalls. Woo-hoo! New tires soon for me!

However, I have already made up my mind on the M-55's. Easy decision in my book. Going for the 255/85R16 size as well.

Here is a link to probably the best thread on the M-55's:

From Toyo M/T to M-55

VS, if you don't mind what is Les Shwab in your area quoting you for 4 M55s mounted?

TIA

Ps - CoderTimT - thank you for the pic

I'm very interested to know this as well since it's franchise and prices vary...

It would be great if you can post a pic once they are mounted and on the rig!
