I was wondering if anyone sells a kit to mount the spare and some gas cans to the original series 100 bumper. I’m planning the modifications I want to make on my lx470 and I like the look of the stock bumpers. Don’t see myself doing any real overlanding just some off roading to get to rural camp/recreation sites etc. no hard crawling. I do like the look of an aftermarket off road front bumper somewhat but would still even cnsider keeping the original if it can be modified to mount a winch.

Anyway, these are some ideas I have. I want the truck to have some capabilities but yet be understated and retain most of the elegance from the stock look. AHC lift, king springs w/reap spacer if needed, Larger AT Tires (my 2005 has 18” rims), updated roof rack and a swing out spare tire/gas can mount would be perfect.

I found this on Instagram so I know someone did it.

The price!! 😵😵😵
Yeah, that's brutal and getting close to the cost of a bumper. On the flipside it will be a lot less weight and you can remove/sell/trade it anytime.

I kind of regret putting all the armor on my vehicle. If I could do it all again my spare tire would be back under my truck and I would have kept the stock rear.

Oh really? Yeah that’s interesting. Yeah I guess you’re right though about the cost it’s not that bad considering.

I do like my swing out that has a basket for wood or gas storage , I do use that often . The spare tire is pretty much just a cool look but if some dummy didn't crash into my rear end and destroy all my spare tire hardware I would have kept it underneath, maybe added a second storage bin instead.

Anyway those trailer swing outs shared earlier seem cool as long as they don't make noise and clank around back there.

I’m always bouncing around at or over GVM with my family of four, plus the dog and a weeks worth of PB&Js and tequila. For this reason I keep the rear stock but 1) that tire hits stuff all the time! 2) I’m seriously concerned one day my tire will rip away from the lift cable. I know when dragging across things the majority of the load is placed on the rear cross member but when dragging ass in reverse it shifts the tire forward and it periodically has to be repositioned.

How much lighter would everyone suppose a swing out only would be if it were mounted directly to the cross member as opposed to a hitch or bumper? I’ve seen a few ppl fabricate things similar to that and retain the plastic bumper. Kinda leaning towards doing that “one day”.

I've always liked that idea aesthetically and for the weight reasons. One of the issues you'd likely run into is making it work with the the bumper cladding. There would be some fine cutting involved, unless you bolted it through the cladding to the crossmember. Though as I think about it, that may look really cool.

I'd tend to think just about the lightest you can go is the Kaymar version. You're not shaving much metal by moving the mounting point to the crossmember, so the weight difference would be negligible at best.

Another issue with it is the with of the crossmember relative to the width of the tailgate. If you mounted the carrier as far offset as you could, you might not be able to get enough clearance so the tire would clear the tailgate. If you did, you're back to more metal and a heavier setup. It's really a balancing act. I suppose you could find someone to make one from aluminum, but that's $$$ and finding someone who could make it might be challenging.

If you were married to the idea, I would bolt a bracket to the outside of the frame that goes to a plate to which you could bolt the swing arm with the pivot. That way, you could just drill the four bolt holes through the bumper cover and have the swing arm just aft of the bumper itself. Then you'd just need a latch. You'd probably have to curve the swing arm to match the bumper curve too. I can't remember how flat it is off the top of my head.

Or you could throw the tire on the roof.
