Want suggestions and opinions please. Tires are going on an 89 HJ61

I need to change out my 33x12.5x15 BFG mudders - just too noisy for me.

I cannot decide if i should put on the BFG A/T 32x11.5x15 or the 33x10.5x15.

Primarily used on road... mild wheeling. Not much difference in size...Will one return better fuel milage? What do you all think?

Thanks

The 33x10.5x15 is a good all rounder. I get a bit of tyre roar at 60mph but its not intrusive and doesnt get worse the faster I go.
Ive found the finer tread on the AT works well in sand which is about all I get to play in.

I think the 33x10.5 will be best for fuel cons, but it will be miniscule

Are you keeping the same rims? What width are they?

It's a 61 right??

The only option is a set of 325/85R16 XMLs. Quietest tire I have had on my HJ61. That's compared to a BFG AT, MT, Truxus MT, and Michelin XL.

of course that would mean a SOA, body lift and re-gearing....but you do want what's best for your land cruiser don't you. ;)

oh, and your milage might take a "slight" hit. ;p

(my truck came with 31x10.5R15s and they worked great)

Ummm... good question Greg. Have not measured them yet, but would like to keep them. I suppose that would be a limiting factor, as I suspect they are fairly wide. I want to keep the factory gearing, and have a 21/2 inch lift.

BFG still offers the AT KO's in a 33x9.5x15 size. The tall skinny look is great for a cruiser, IMHO. The narrower tire is also more friendly to your power steering pump. And better mileage is assured with the skinnier tire.

Sheldon's dad is running those in his HJ61...they look great on the truck.

Yes... they do look cool, but i was wondering how the tall skinnies handle the corners. Not like Im drifting the cruiser through the onramps.... but is sidewall curl under an issue?

i take the curves under throttle and no problems yet...
mind you if i drop off the board for a while that could be the reason...

Some people will tell you no. Personally, I hate them, and wouldn't touch them and their tall sissy load range C sidewalls with a ten foot pole. A friend ran them on his 40, and on sidewalls at full pressure the tire would still buckle. (Mind you, this is tall skinny on a 15, not a 16.)

Personally I think the 9.5 is a tad skinny on a 60 and the bfg is not exactly a stiff tire either. When I had an fj60 I ran 33x10.5 radial swampers. I liked them for a mix of road and offroad. Offroad I swore that would be the skinniest i go... couldn't imagine a 9.5.

MT's are loud if you want a quieter tire go to a AT

Is that on a 40, 60 or 70 wayne?

I agree with ridgerunner. a c to a d makes a difference on a 60. IMHO

Sheldons Dad has 16" stock steel wheels. The 16" size creates less sidewall, and typically is load rated higer. They can not be comapred to 33x15.

I forget the exact size they are...imperial is 32x9.5 or something like that: http://www.gscruiserparts.com/hj61_2f.html

He is also running bolt on spacers to give width. I figure a 16x7 with 2"-2.5BS and 255/85R16 looks bout right for a 50mm lifted HJ61.

sidewall is one reason 255/85R16 is such a nice tire.

If you want 31.5" I would be tempted to look at:

To bad they don't come in 255/85R16...

A picture is worth a thousand words!

Measured the OD on my rims...16'' (from rim lip to rim lip right?) and I think they are 10 wide.

The slimmer tires do look nice IMHO, and I like the idea of better milage. (9.5 would be too skinny I think, and would not fit my rim).

We'll see what the local Fountain Tire will give me for my mudders, and I might go for that Pro-Comp special, and compromise with the 32X11.5, as they dont have 33's in less than 12.5
