Now that I have a tire swing out what’s the best method to secure the spare? Just a lug nut wheel lock or is there a better way?

I’m thinking of upgrading my lug nut set and then just using one of my old spine lug nuts to secure the spare. Not sure that’s secure enough.

I run a spline nut on it.
If the want it, they’ll take it. Just need to prevent the casual crook.

Well, I guess if they bring the socket set to steel the spare, they could just unbolt the tire carrier. It’s actually only two bolts! Lol

You could get a trasharoo or something similar that covers the lugs and use a cable lock to secure it to the tire.

The mount on my carrier has the two bolts, which would remove the mounting plate with the wheel attached. So, we drilled a hole in that assembly and added a lock to secure the plate to the carrier.

I'm thinking I may kill some of the nuts with a tack weld that could be ground off if I needed but would deter quick theft. Or maybe red locktite. In the end each swing out is still only 4 bolts if you know how its put together. I think all you can do is make it harder for opportunistic random theft. Maybe if I insulated the 4 bolts from the truck, I could attach the positive battery terminal to it...

I just looked. It is about $50 to buy a battery powered angle grinder. That will defeat all of these plans. If they are planning ahead, they will get it if they want it.
Walk by opportunists are all that we can really discourage.

Yeah. Positive battery terminal it is then…
