i'm looking to purchase an 80 series by fall, i just cant squeeze 3 mastiffs into a two seater anymore.
the questions i have are.
whats the best year to turbo charge?
and as far as top end speed how fast do they go?
what if any recommended sites i need to view for shopping tips?
are cruisers full time all wheel drive? if not what or how do you engage the all wheel drive function when snow falls?
from the posts i have read the 95 seems to be a good year to start looking, do you all agree?
do i need to do any motorwork before i add boost?
has anyone in the states turbocharged an 80 successfully and what kit did they use?
i appreciate any and all tips. thanks in advance

The original ECU program is limited by compromises made in these areas by the factory in the elusive attempt to satisfy "all the people all the time". POP or Performance Optimized Programming is the technology we use to unlock these compromises.

There have been kits available for '95-'97.
You can get a TRD supercharger for '93 on up, however.

As a famous Toyota parts guy once said... "Speed costs money... how fast do you want to go?" or something like that.

All the ones sold in the US are AWD. Few in other regions of the globe came with part-time 4wd.

The Safari turbo kit I have seen (from OZ) are only for '95 and up. I have not been following it, but I believe MAF(Man-A-Fre) and Slee Off Road had been brewing their own kits sometime ago. Not 100% (Slee's kit could have been by AVO, also from Down Under).

Some may suggest a head gasket job, as well as to make sure that your cooling system is in a tip-top shape.

A few listers; "turbocruiser", "reffug"(maybe), etc... have the Safari system which is no longer available in the US. More guys have the TRD sc's in their units, and I believe "Dusty" has a home brewed turbo system that seems to be working pretty well.

I'm sure others can chime in and get the facts straight.

There are quite a few with turbos here, Clownmidget, reffug, lx extreme, dusty etc. Use the Search function in the 80 series area and you will find more info than you want. Be warned that $7,000 is the ballpark for a complete turbo kit. I supercharged mine and the top speed I was able to get with 35s and a 3.5" lift is 118mph. I now have a 6" lift so the top end is slower and I am not that interested in finding out. The turbo will give you more, but remember these things have the aerodynamics of a brick. Again SEARCH and youl will be reading for hours. If you get serious about getting a turbo installed about the only option readily available is from Slee Offroad (check the vendors section).

I wouldn't plan on getting a real high top speed out of a 80, but with enough power and the right gearing you can get them to accelerate pretty well.

According to Toyota the maximum "sustained crusing speed" is 80mph which is higher than any legal posted speed in the US.

As already addressed, this is an expensive upgrade and it can be very satisfying. Do remember that you will be married to premium fuel for the rest of the life of the vehicle and at 10-13 mpg that will be costly.

I can now do 100mph easily. My entire turbo build set me back less than a grand-just break out the welder and glue it together....then cross your fingers and start it up

Im now in the process of building it for what its made for...one can spend a lot of cash to go slow also

I believe Texas just raised their speed limit to 80mph on Interstate 10 and one other highway, JFYI.
