I have just got my 92 landcruiser back from the auto repair shop after they replaced the distributor. The car has no power you have to floor it to get to 40 MPH. I think that the timing needs to be reset It's either retarded or advanced so far that the knock senors are retarding it way too much. I have looked all over this engine to find the timing marks and cannot seem to find them. I have looked at the balancer and find no mark on the balancer or marks to measure against. I opened up the access plate at the bottom of the bellhousing and see the flywheel but no marks. I also took of the access plate on the drivers side in front of the flywheel It's hard to see in there but I don't see any marks. Where do you find the timing marks for this car? And how do you set the timing?

hope this isn't too silly of a question; you did look towards the top of the crank/harmonic balancer, just off to the driver side? your shop manual (you do have one, right?) should have wonderful pictures and a detailed account of how to set/adjust the timing. shawn

Yes I did I don't see any thing there also can't find a mark on the harmonic balancer. I don't have a shop manual but wanted to set the timing to 3-8 degrees BTDC. I know to jump the E1 & TE1 to get the engine into service mode, but just can't find the marks.

I think that the repair shop got the dist one tooth off because the dist is full advance adjustment and still has no power any movement in the other direction kills the engine.

Supraman,

IF a shop did the work and you have to floor it to get to 40mph, then I suggest you take it back to the shop and have them fix it.

If you plan to fix it yourself (and it sounds like you do) and you don't get a response, then I will look at my Haynes manual tomorrow evening. I believe it covers the 3FE engines in the earlier 80s.

Put the motor at TDC on compression stroke. Where is the rotor pointing? If it's not pointing at wire #1, then pull the dizzy and reset to the proper position. You know the rest.

My 3FE has a little rubber plug that plugs the inspection port for the timing mark. It is a little needle with a ball on the end. It is located on the passenger side of the engine way in the back on the front face of the bell housing. It is kind of hard to get to and is usually dirty. It is about the size of a 50 cent piece but it is not round.
Good Luck.
