So I can't figure out how to get the timing gear oil seal in... it is that spiral thing that slides into the timing cover on the front. It is just slightly too large to get in there and I have already mangled it a bit trying to get it in. Still I can't get the damn thing in, so before I completely mangle it, can someone please explain to me how the hell I get this thing in?

I assume you have the timing cover off of the vehicle?
If this is the case. I use a Large socketsimilar to teh outside diameter of teh seal. Them tap it in. Once you get an edge going in it will slide.
If your seal is all boogered up get another one. you don't want to to have it leak and have totake it apart again.

Yes the cover is off... I am rebuilding the motor.

I didn't try a socket, but I did try a manual gasket/bearing driver which I have found to be better than a socket as it is a flat round piece of aluminum but it still slid in crooked and now the metal on the sides got smooshed a bit. I figured I could throw some make a gasket on it once I got it going in and not worry about it. I think that I am going to play it safe which means... waiting for the freaking Toyota dealer to get me one. Any other ideas/suggestions for getting this sucker on?

SOOO now I made the old dumb ass move of the day...

What the heck is this thing? For some reason I had a brain fart and thought it was the oil seal. I also put in a picture of the seal and how badly I screwed up the paint on the timing cover... which I now need to redo... eish. Anyway the first picture is the one I need identified and what I need to do with it. It came in the gasket kit I got from clevite/felpro.

Looks like an exhaust donut to me. That would have made a funny thread if you'd gotten it in there and started it up...

Well that explains why I didn't recognize it. I have only taken the manifold off to replace it with headers.

gasket and seal identification

Not sure if this is on there or not but Coolerman has a good gasket and seal guide on his site with actual photos instead of drawings if it doesnt have this it will still be a help sooner or later! :)

seal

You might want to check the crank pulley/balancer for a seal wear groove. If you can feel it at all install a 45mm sleeve(can't remember tech. name for it) or replace the balancer. It will most likely leak oil if not corrected.
