Hey I need some help. I have an '85 FJ60. I just blew a belt of some kind. I could hear some faint rattling this afternoon. The pace of the rattle was consistent with the idle of the engine...as I revved the engine the rattle's pace increased. It got much louder right before it blew. It was smoking a little and I could smell burnt rubber. There was also a loud whine typical of a belt going out. All three of the belts in front of the engine look fine. Did I just blow my timing belt? Thankfully, I saw no oil underneath the truck afterward. If I did, how much should I expect to pay to have it fixed?

With what you've posted, I'm pointing at the smog pump. Timing belt= engine shutting down and will not restart.

Edit: Actually, you don't specify if it in fact won't run now. To see if it's the TIMING belt, pop the oil fill cap outta the valve cover, shine a flashlight in, and have someone crank 'er over for at least 10 secs. If the valvetrain moves, then good. NO movement=you were right.

These have timing gears. ;-)

Bwaahaahaa!

x2. It sounds like something that is driven by one of the belts has siezed. If your power steering pump is leaking, then the air pump is the first suspect. Take the belts off and turn by hand and the pulleys (except the crank pulley) and see which one doesn't turn.

60's have timing gears......not belts or chains.

:o. (Does this kick me outta the 60's club?) I looked good until I edited, eh? Think BEFORE you type, think BEFORE you type, think...

Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully more minor than I thought. I don't know my way around the engine that well, so I'll be having a mechanic check it out for me. I always check here first though. Thanks again!

My bet would be the smog pump. They die like flies on the first frost. Just take off your belts and turn things. Something is bound up, that's the culprit. Most people take the guts out of the smog pump and put ir back on as it serves as a tensioner for a vital belt. IT's easy, I did it years ago before there were any forums such as this. Come to find out, hundreds of people did exactly the same thing I did.
