Use had my timing belt done at 170k miles. I don't know the history as I bought my Cruiser with 151k miles and there were no markings showing it had been done by the previous owner. Based on the condition of the Toyota belt that was replaced, I'm guessing it was done at some point, but your guess is as good as mine. All toyota parts, water pump, and component kit cost $671. I provided my own fan belt bought from Napa for an additional $40. I'm a happy camper! No more worrying whether it has been done or not!

Sweet! I just took care of mine this week also.
Next time you buy parts, hit up Cruiserdan, he is on this site. He's the parts manager at American toyota in Albuquerque. I just got the entire kit with the drive belt for $404.00. He knows what's up and he's got the hookup.

Toyota will tell you 90k. I'd have to agree. You won't hear many, if any stories of them coming apart at twice that mileage, but it's always good to do it on time and have no worries....and when you do, do the whole deal, not just the timing belt. If you do it yourself or if you have someone else do it, trust me and use the nice gentleman I noted above. He is a parts guru.

Also look on carfax to see if there has been a documented 90k service. If not, look on the engine cover or the timing belt covers to see if there is a sticker that states it has been done. If you can find no proof, then you gotta do it...just to be safe. My rig had no proof at 116,000 miles, so I did it. I did it sooner than I was planning cause my water pump was going bad. When I opened it up, the timing belt had most definitely been changed recently(I could still see all the print on the belt perfectly). But obviously the water pump and the rest of the parts that are included in a proper 90k were left....hence DO IT ALL!!

Was not listed on carfax so thinking has not been done, PO seemed to have service work done at dealer so all was listed. Guess its in my near future. Thx.

My guess ~80K/6yrs on belt by the fraying on inside edge.

Yours has definitely been done before. I had a suspicion ours was not done and when I opened up the cover at 168k the belt was completely covered in surface cracks. your looks like it has about 80-90k on it as the marking seems to have worn off but the belt itself looks fine.

^ THIS. Every high mileage belt I've seen has had a pattern of superficial surface cracks on the non-drive side. Yours looks much newer than the 168K on the vehicle.

Been worrying about mine as the previous owner said it had been replaced at 90k. After trying to find a steering leak , I noticed slightly rounded edges on the crankshaft bolt and looked further. The belt was replaced along with water pump just as he said. At 152,000 miles, I'm good for another 50-60,000 miles. 110,000+ miles on belt and water pump is good enough for me.

Now have to figure out where the leak is coming from. Hope it's just a hose or connection and not the steering rack.

This is probably not great advice, but is a calming answer.

The belts are generally designed to have a 2x Factor of Safety meaning that they are expected to fail at 180k miles, but the recommended changes are at 90k.

I too just purchased an 04' LC with 113K and no record of timing belt replacement. I did not even own the truck for 24 hours and I had the whole front of the engine tore out to do the job, to create piece of mind. Well worth it to spend the day doing the job though, because I know from the belt that it was not done.

By the look of that pic I would guess that it was changed at 100k. The one that I had just changed looked like it had more wear into it... No cracking, but just from the change in the rubber firmness if that makes sense-
