Quick question, when the timing advances, does the bb move up or down in the window?

The flywheel turns clockwise when looking from the front of the vehicle. As you turn the flywheel clockwise by hand, first the bb comes into view (7deg BTDC) then the straight line comes into view (TDC). If you have the vehicle at idle with the ignition at 7deg BTDC the BB should be aligned with the pointer. If you want to advance the idle timing, you would turn the distributor to make the BB move down the window (move counter clockwise).

A very topical question as i was fiddling with timing last weekend! :)

I wondered what 'BTDC people are running. I set mine to the mark this weekend but at +1000m above sea level the engine (3F carb) feels flat and unresponsive.

There are no other timing marks other than the ball and pointer, so how do we go from here, just by "feel"..? How do you know at what 'BTDC you have set it to..?

Cheers ~PHIL

Some timing lights have a dial on them that allow you to set the advance. (I don't have one of these but) I assume that you set the dial to the additional advance you want, then adjust the distributor until you line up with the mark again. For example if you want 17deg BTDC advance, set the dial to 10, then twist the distributor until you see the bb line up with the pointer: 10 + 7 = 17!

Static timing

I live in the Salt Lake City area, so my Cruisers have never seen sea level. Most of the time I'm between 4500 and 6500 feet in elevation. Both of the 2Fs I've owned have been pretty happy around 12 to 14 degrees of static advance with a stock ignition curve. At 7 degrees they felt like a plug wire had been pulled off.
