I have a rotting frame on a 84 bj60 that needs replacment and would like to know what is the average time spent taking the body off and swapping out the frame for a replacment. I have done lots of auto work in the past but this would be a extensive job to do. Also, need to patch up the holes in the body sheet metal so may fab up a mounting jig with wheels and have the body flat bed towed to the body repair shop.

I would say at least a year or more.

I would say at least a year or more.

in my garage this seems right.

But if you drive it down to Guatemala to visit cruiser_guy his team can change one out in four days.

Harvy, after doing a rebuild for 2 years I am jaded. I love working on my cruiser but not for extended periods. If I had to do it again I would import a rust free FJ60 from the USA and install your diesel engine in it and call it a day.

For 3k you can get a high mileage fj60 rust free from the south.

I have spent 10k plus in my rebuild.............. I would not do it again. But I did learn lots about my truck.

brownbear. good point.

Yea I dont know how extentensive your body/frame rot was but my frame is gradually going. IF I buy a used one down south how would I protect the inside of the frame from exfoliation corrosion? Basicly pie crust corosion where if flakes off in chunks. I want this to be the one and only time this vehicle will be treated for corrosion. Can line-x be applied to the entire underside of a truck while its on the frame and call it done for life? I saw somone elses cruiser where his frame is zinc dipped. He towed it from the states to Vancouver.

Now Guatamala sounds a bit to far to drive just to have my cruiser worked on say mm 3,000 miles or more?

3 grand for a used rust free cruiser sounds more like a relief to do and putting in the engine is usally a two day venture.

BTW the tranny, engine of a bj-60 will fit into the body of a fj60 fine?

Ohh I picked up a set of seats that are nearly 98% in perfect condition. Thay were free and sitting in front of somones yard. All leather with side bolsters. Only thing is thay are black. The mounts on the rails dont match up so a few things I could do. Detach the mounts from these seats and make a bracket that aligns these seat mounts with my trucks body. That is a possibility. Any ideas?

sounds like it would take a while ( you probably already know that) , but on the other hand some people just get things done faster than others ..

this is what i would do but thats just me. just trying to help here

if you don't want it to take forever rip it apart yourself and outsource every little job. when you get it back bolt it all up again, and just to be safe have a reputable mechanic look it over before you drive it ( or some mechnical friends, they might spot something thats outta place that you didn't )

good luck.. you better really LOVE that truck.

Seats sound good.

The engine tranny will not bolt straight in. The mounts have to be removed off your BJ frame and installed on the FJ frame. doable though. Many on here have done it. I have not.

If you got a rust free FJ frame from the usa it would be the same amount of work to convert your engine and tranny to the fj as it would be putting a frame under your truck. Infact the conversion would probably be less work IMOP>

You should not linex the frame or underbody. It will hide rust and keep rusting, only to rot out and fail before you know it. Plus frames are not allowed to be linex bedliner or whatever. As it can hide cracks. So you could not pass a safety with it covered. Supposedly I dunno..

Compare costs before had. Clean rust free 60 from Arizona, or repairing your truck.

I failed to really go over the cost before I jumped in.

Uh oh, I am going to try this project in about 2-3 months. My brother and I will be doing it. I hope it works out, I plan to fix all my rust and por15 A LOT! My hope is to have a rust free cruiser that will last for a long, long time.

October to April.

In the same boat. Sounds like a rust free fj60 is in my future. BTW, 62 might be a little better.

How much work would it take to integrate a 3b motor/f55 into a fj62?
