So I was putting some roof rack bars on my 81 tonight and was completely shocked that I couldn't put my roof rack clamp up on basically 90% of my the rack above the doors.
Any fixes for this?

My Thule clamps will interfere gently with the rubber weatherstrip at the window top edge but doesn't hurt them. I gave them a few taps with the hammer to minimize this so they don't get torn. Your clamps must protrude downward from the bottom of the drip rail more than Thule - what brand are they?

yakima. they are flipping tight, like i cant go up above the doors at all its brutal.

I only slightly changed the angles of my Thules but if they'd interfered greatly I would have simply pounded them more. Funny that we're having this conversation and more haven't mentioned this with the sheer number of 80s here with racks. It is a tight fit.

Provide a link to the rack feet you have and maybe someone will have a suggestion. Surely there are a lot of Yakima users here who have not seen the light of Thule..... heh.

PS - note that the black trim on the gutter protrudes downward some but this "fin" can be compressed. Perhaps you need to hold the foot tight up compressing this as you tighten the foot onto the gutter so it's a preferential angle. That's what I do on my Thule feet to maximize clearance to the rear doors so I can put the rack where I want it.

did you get teh A1's? those should fit on the 80s with no problems. im also running the thule 300s (standard height) gutter towers, with no issues. whats causing you to not be able to clamp them on? got a pic of this issue?

I got a free-bee set of thule towers and bars from a buddy.
Something to use while the aluminum rack gets built.

I managed to get them to fit basically wherever I want.
When i tightened them up they bent the rails slightly to allow them to fit nice.
I am really happy now because I can haul my playboat!

Shouldn't a play boat just fit inside? My Baidarkas ride on top but I rarely bother to throw my surf boat on top.

My yak fits fine. Close of course, but no interference.

not when you have a fully loaded truck, or taking numerous people kayaking.

Or simply just paddling in salt water. I don't like putting a wet boat in my truck. I am a bit anal that way.
