So my 2008 with 120k seems to make a very regular ticking noise when it is cold but not when it is warm. It is a very sharp, metallic sound, not at all like a pre-ignition knock. Reading some of the Tundra forums, they talk about sticking lifters (?), exhaust manifold cracks and injectors.

Anyone else notice this? Any other ideas? (I haven't tried the screwdriver-to-the-ear yet since my only long screwdriver was 'borrowed' by my oldest son and not returned. Grrr.)

Thanx guys.

@mark71 - Is the ticking rhythmic, correlating with the engine RPMs? What I am thinking is that the oil viscosity may be too thick (thin?) for your start up temp and you might just be hearing normal engine noise before the oil gets a chance to warm up and lube the engine top-end.

That's the sound reminding you to get the new 2016. My iPhone does the same thing after only 2yrs. Lol

Very rhythmic ticking, like a fast watch and definitely engine RPM dependent. Not the chattering, since it sounds like it is coming from one discrete point on the left side of the motor.

Don't tempt me more than I already am, Angelo1. The 2016 definitely has some nice features the 2008 doesn't (but not $40-50k nicer).

Not too versed on the 200s yet, hopefully will be picking one up next week if it passes the PPI but the exhaust manifolds on 100s crack and tick exactly as you describe till the motor is warm. The ones on our 470 were changed a while back due to this.

Also a 2-3 foot section of pipe like 1" diameter pvc sprinkler piping I use works really well at isolating the sounds much like the screwdriver.

Isn't that from the valves? I had that noise from new and service techs said they all do it and just need time for the oil to reach them.

Is it a new sound? My 2011 has always have some "valve noise." Not the quietest engine.

It is a new sound. And I know the valves are pretty noisy, but that hasn't changed and they are more of a clatter anyways.

Another piece of the weirdness: just after I start it, it ISN'T ticking. Then, when I return 5 minutes later, the ticking is there. Revving the motor a few times may decrease it a bit, but driving it 15 minutes definitely makes it stop.

WTF?

lol I'm not any help. I did notice mine was kinda noisy when i bought it with about 127k but way quieter than my Direct Injected 3.0L Lexus GS ever was. I figure the 5.7 is a proven powerplant that can be located in a hurry if this one launches out of the frame for any unforeseen reason...
