So how do they* keep the order and protect the populace from themselves?

For that, we have to circle back to Hollywood. I’m painting with a broad brush here, it’s much more expansive than just “Hollywood” (but it’s a convenient term for many reasons.)

The how comes in with the illusion that humans have free will.

Do we? Do you?

Or are humans just moist robots? Programmable meat, if you will.

If you think you have free will, you are right where they* want you.

I sure hope we get some Nick Bostrom theory woven back into this yarn. There was some foreshadowing very early on...

the rogen podcast is like summer reading...or a prereq to the primary course. im guessing he is allowing the audience sufficient time to complete that task.

i’m also assuming that the fermi paradox will get mentioned when the story circles back to:

It is irrefutable scientific fact that we* either:

a) exist in the original simulation
b) exist in a simulation within a simulation within a simulation within a.....infinity
c) are the (eventual) creators of the original simulation.

Given the exponential rate of technological advancement, the odds of this happening is 100%. It already does on small scale and we are still in the stone ages.

Someone with more time on their hands can calculate the odds, but the likelihood of ‘a‘ or ‘c’ is (1/infinity). Possible, but unlikely. The probability of ‘b’ happening is (infinity-2)/(infinity), which is pretty high.

So while we may (do) live in a computer simulation, we are only going to address the simulation/reality that we* are programmed to occupy.

They*/He* excluded from We*. They*, he* may or may not transcend individual simulations.

Understood.

In that light, I'll rephrase my desire to say I hope that, while addressing the construct we find ourselves in, the story touches upon the inevitable existential crisis one must process after realizing/accepting that all of this is in fact a simulation. Specifically, how does one deal with questions like "what's the f'ing point of ANYTHING????" after acknowledging that we, and everything around us, are ultimately just code running on a giant computer under the desk of a being that was fortunate enough to survive everything the universe could throw at it while attaining super intelligence.

To date, I have only come across one somewhat reasonable response to this, and it's not something I'm ready to fully digest. My hope is for true enlightenment.

They*/He* excluded from We*. They*, he* may or may not transcend individual simulations.
Very interested in seeing this theory develop...

Oh, and I apologize for the hijack...I'll sit back and quietly enjoy the rest of the show.

I appreciate you using the term ‘theory’ for those among us who are not ready to to accept the truth. However, we don’t have time to fully bring them up to speed or coddle their minds with the possibility of an alternative to what is below the surface or debate its existence with them. It is there whether one chooses to believe or not.

The existential crisis can be resolved in many ways. One way is take command of one’s code and program one’s own reality. Or you may want to find ultimate freedom living in the space between the lines of code, not bound by the rules of the program.

If we take this further, the pinnacle of transcendence is to become one of they*, whose dimensional mobility appears inbound by the laws of science.

The thought of being an NPC (default mode for 99% of us*) in the simulation is rather bleak indeed.

For the sake of simplifying things. Assume that the pronoun we* or us* refers to an NPC.

Assume the level of they* is not one you are ready to aspire to or concern yourself with, and that if you happened to find yourself reading this “shop thread” that you are opening the escape hatch from NPC and still have the option of returning to safety (kinda like the red & blue pills) or fleeing to the dark, cold, beautiful world of freedom.

How do 'they' keep control?

It's super easy. Have to ever thought about the billions of people who walk this earth that are too dumb to actually think for themselves?
The billions who fall in line.
The billions that instinctively look to the gov't for help.
The billions who worship celebrities (the same as above).
The billions who allow corrupt, nasty, over populated, murderous countries such as China to still be a thing, all because they supply the newest I phone.

We don't need alien overlords or any fancy computer program...........we are doing a great job of killing ourselves.

We won’t stop to correct any misguided theories. I will remind that PMC made the same mistake of assigning malice where none existed. Shaving with Occam’s Razor will not take us down to the truth.

Albeit obscure, there's a lot more fiber in both of these 'solutions' than Max Tegmark's conclusion that the NPC should simply strive to keep things 'interesting' lest the ASI get bored and terminate your program. That doesn't go a long way towards dealing with the bleakness for me.

Appreciate the Matrix analogy, but this sounds like it's taking an Eric Weinstein "Portal" turn...or perhaps just running alongside parallel.

Good stuff.

Words and language are too primitive a form of communication to explain the answers you are searching for. You may need to sit under the mind expander for a file transfer.

Back to being programmable meat...

Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer? You can watch Caesar reprogram a dog in real time using the same energy that they* use to maintain order in the world.

On the human level, go watch Tony Robbins access people's source code using NLP and hypnosis techniques.

These are microscopic displays of what is possible. To keep a planet of almost 8 billion people spinning on its axis, we’ll need to scale things up.

We all know how they* do it, we just don’t appreciate the extent to which they do it. Media, movies, tv programming, radio, music... that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now there’s social media, podcasts, periscopes, YouTube, even game apps - all broadcasting directly into our helpless brains 24/7 from the second we emerge from the womb.

Every instant of exposure is a gentle nudge in a desired direction. They’re usually imperceptible, but sometimes these nudges are blatant calls to action in the immediate present. Sometimes they are used as a harbinger of events that will unfold in the future. They may give cautionary warnings to prevent catastrophe, or may prime those who will be called into service to auto-activate at the appropriate time.

The paradox is that each of us thinks we are uniquely immune to these nudges, that we possess free will - but if you search your internal hard drive, you will be hard-pressed to find even a single original thought. It’s all been implanted in bits and pieces over time. We merely parrot what we have absorbed.
