hey y'all - long time lurker and still looking for my first LC. I found an '01 with 123k in Illinois. Being from Texas, I have no gauge on rust. It's one consolation for the hot summers and warm winters.

What do these pictures say to you? The truck is otherwise very clean. 1-owner, no accidents, gear interior, etc.

Wow, for an Illinois truck, that is in fantastic condition. I'm surprised the cat shields haven't rusted out. You should see some of the rust queens from Michigan.

Doesn't look to bad does it, you could clean up what is there and use some rust kill if you wanted. That is like brand new compared to a lot of trucks in the uk where I am from. To be honest I just treat rust as maintanence, as long as you are aware if it and take measures to clean and treat it, even in areas that use salt you can keep it under control.

The rust may be ok, but what is the black gunk on the panhard bar, driveshaft, and muffler in the first pic? If paint (?) that will smell awful when it burns off the muffler and I wonder about driveshaft balance since there's so much of it? The front driveshaft is very rusty in a place that should be smooth, clean surface in front of the slip joint. Either that driveshaft has been out of grease for some time, or the truck has not been driven enough keep that area rust free. Given the gunk and rust on the driveshafts, you may be looking at clean-up job on those. Look carefully at the body.

IMHO, buying a long distance LC only makes sense if you live in the salt belt and want a rust free rig. Save yourself a lot of headache and money and buy a local Texas LC even if it takes longer and you have to pay a little more, you'll be much happier in the long run.

True, I wouldn't buy a rusty one and take it to Texas as obviously no rust is better.

This is a good point. They are pretty hard to find without extensive leather/steering wheel damage, though. Hot hot heat. 2001's (my ideal year) are also getting more & more rare with this low of mileage. That's the only reason I'm considering it.

Looks like some of it's been treated or covered up, hard to tell. Get a picture of rear end and ebrake components. Should give you and idea of what you'll be up against for rusty bolts.

I agree, it almost looks like they painted over the panhard and driveshaft etc. Or undercoated?. I know up here people will undercoat with rubber type coatings. It isnt the best idea on a used vehicle as it traps crap under and rots quicker.I'd hold off and find one closer to you. IMHO. good luck!

I would agree- looks like a lot of overspray over a lot of scale-and the other spots that are untreated dont look great- check out the torsion bar adjustment arms.

That's about as good as it gets in Illinois for a 15 year old vehicle. It has been obviously sprayed to cover up or thwart further rust. The price and the rest of the rigs condition would determine whether it's worth it...how much?

I wouldn't be fazed by leather work. And i say that because I've found some great vendors here in the DFW area who can easily fix my worn seats. Their work is so good, I'm power drunk when I look at other LC's. Leather takes a beating in the Texas heat, you kind of have to assume it''s going to happen sooner rather than later, and just be ready to replace.

And i wouldn't entertain a rust belt LC living in Texas. I understand the excitement for low miles, but I think if you hit Craigslist religiously for all of the Texas cities, you'll be surprised at what you find. Any by that, I mean every city.

/Thread.

Trudd, if you're wanting a series 100, it's a good idea to really branch out. I spent 6 months looking for my 100 series. I pretty much search from Montana to Washington, and down to the SF bay area and Vegas. Found a 1-owner with perfect records and never off road 400 or so miles away. You're looking at a relatively low volume vehicle that many buyers plan to keep for a very long time.

As to the repainted truck you're looking at, I'd pass. ;)

Good luck

they're asking $11,500, which includes shipping. claiming 1-owner. timing belt at 104k. the closest thing I've found here recently was a 2000 with accident reported (no airbags deployed), with 145k asking $15,000. Mint interior as well.

Thanks everyone for the input. Never thought I'd consider buying a car before driving it. Nearly happened here - think I'll wait it out.

Cheers
