thinking about taking a look at this truck...

2001 Toyota Land Cruiser

about to pull a carfax. What do you think on price? anything I should look for when I drive over? Thanks guys...

Check all the normal stuff you should check. It needs at least $1k for tires right off the bat. The interior and leather look good. If you can deal with the little dents and stuff, the rest of the body looks decent. That being said, as a buyer, I think the price is high. As a seller, it's probably priced where I'd put it too. Also, seller states he bought a LX vs keeping the LC. The LC might need a bunch of maintenance. Between paying for maintenace and a $1k+ set of tires, the delta for selling the LC as-is and buying a different 100 that was already was up to date and had good tires was a better deal. I don't know if thats what this case is but it makes sense and it's what I would do in that situation. I would spend the money for a PPI and figure it out from there.

Good luck!

Honestly, if you are buying a pre 2003 model you should look for one without the nav system so that you can install a new unit, that is the appeal of the older ones. Id pass and look for a non nav, they are common

Went and drove the truck today. its been on Craigslist for 22 days. young man from a nice family owns the truck. he went and bought an lx470 and now has no need for the old LC.
Pros-
exterior is 6-10. no real blemishes, paint looks ok, but the truck is 15 years old
interior- 8 of 10. really pretty nice. no bad stains on carpet, seats looked really good.
engine looked good. idled well, ac blew cold.

Cons-
- exhaust is LOUD. really loud. is this common?
- noise at right rear door under hard acceleration. kinda loud roar
- abs light comes on. owner thinks its the right rear sensor at the wheel and needs to be replaced
- no nav cd so you have to look at stupid intro screen the whole time.
- airbag light is on
- truck has quite a bit of rattles. wonder if it needs new shocks.
- needs new tires. they are s***
- wheels need to be replaced or painted
-needs major service in 25k miles
-4 owners, spent time in WV. was in a minor wreck.

Seller is motivated as he leaves for college in 2 weeks. He is a nice young man with a sweet stable of cars. I want to be fair with him but not buy his problem. We started at 11,500 and he was down to 10k before I even took it for a drive. my plan is to get a ppi and see what I missed. thoughts?

Meh, I would wait for something more interesting. I don't see any real aspects of this rig that would make it stand out......

Land Cruiser

half the miles, better looking, offer 14k and see where it goes!

even if I could get it for 8k?

Eh, your in "cruiser territory" lots to pick from in that region with no rust, if it was me I would wait for something with lower miles/bettertires/TB changed/no nav. Those items alone will cost you 3k if done right and the suspension rattles would drive me insane (another 2k). its all relative....

sounds like the truck is kinda clapped out. Im trying to eliminate my truck payment (2013 tacoma) and will be needing a truck soon. BTW, I bought 4x4 taco for 30k and 3 years later got a buy it back offer for 27k. 3 years, 3k depreciation. gotta love a taco.

at 7k I'd think you are in it right, 6k would be perfect... alot depends on YOUR skill set... if you can do the work... tb shocks exhaust all that is less than $500 in parts off ebay... nice set of tires off ebay $500... a couple weekends cleaning... a heat gun to the plastic bumper and if you were all in for 7k that would be pretty damn good for that truck... imho

thats kinda what I was thinking. 6 to 7k would be sweet.

So i am a newbe at looking for LC/LX's but i think the 11k price might be to much.. and especially after what you have said while driving it. I think at 7.5-8k max for it might do the trick. IMHO

My 98 with 217K miles is quiet - no rattle, no loud exhaust, no noise on rear door (maybe due to wreck and was not fixed properly?). I dont have nav, but I would make sure the nav is actually working - not sure how to check that with no CD. You don't want to end up getting the CD and the nav is broken. Tires are about ~1K depending what brands. OEM shocks are cheap if you install them yourself. I am not sure about the ABS stuffs, but this can't be cheap. Any rust below the car?

If it is cheap enough (I would say 7K or less), and you have time to troubleshoot the problems, and don't mind doing that then maybe it is a good deal. If it is supposed to be a daily drive, then maybe not the right vehicle. There is a reason its been on CL for 22 days. Good LC with fair price sells quickly.

Having said that, personally the airbag light worries me though. I would walk away if the airbag system has deployed or have problem regardless of the price, but that's just me.
