I am looking for an axel upgrade on the front of my SOA 60 on 38.5 swampers. Currently I am running the stock axel with 4.88s, ARB, and hysteer, and longfields. In the rear I have a Tacoma V6 axel with 8" TLC 3rd member, which allows for centered diff to Atlas 3.8 connection. I was looking at the hybrid Dana 60 that All-Pro offers.

Any reason that this wouldn't work?? I looks like the same width and 3rd member that I have now. Thoughts always appreciated.

If you have the factory stock front diff in your 60 series it means you have a 9.5" 3rd member .. what I see Allproff claims to use 8" ( from solid axle pic up or 80 series ) 3rd member ..

Waste of time and omney for 30 spline junk..

Use the 30 spline longs untill you break them..

Then go get a real 60 and wheel it.

I have about $1400 into my built 60 front end..

Mace,
Can you clarify '60' as in Dana 60 or 60 series front end?

Do you feel that there is no way of building up a TLC front axle for proper strength?

I do Mean A dana 60 axle. Most of the rigs in this section already have a FJ60 axle in them ;)

The term "proper strength" means different things to difeent people.

If you think you can build up a LC axle to be just as strong as a D60 you are wasting your time. Yes, you can build a LC axle to be fairly stout, but it will only be 30 spline instead of 35 spline and will cost as much if not more than a properly built D60 axle.

It really comes down to what you want to do. If you truly what to abuse your rig then either get a D60 or do a 35 (or 40) spline 9" with 60 outers. Teh LC center section is not as strong, the housings are not as strong, and, most of the time, they really are not wide enough for the lift and large tires.

Like I said, get a set of 30 spline longfields (shafts are about as strong as the stock D60 stuff) and then wheel till you truly start breaking things. then sell the longs and fund a axle that is a bit more allong the lines of what will handle the abuse.

Mace, I like you line of thought here. I don't think I've seen a 35/40 spline 9" with 60 outers. sounds interesting. I've haven't broken the front axel since the longfields went in. I have broken draglinks, birfields, shocks, U-joints, driveshafts, bank accounts, and a couple of hearts.

I am considering hydro-steering this spring and beadlocks and thought this might be a good time for an axel upgrade before I start welding and setting up the steering.

Who's got a sourse on some full width D60s, what's a good price for a built and locked axel???????

35 spline 9" axles are an easy one.

The 40 spline stuff starts to get really expensive tho..

You can figure around 1K for a Full width D60. They can be had cheaper as long as you are willing to wait for a good deal. I got mine for $400

upgrade the outers to 35 spline = $150
Locker of choice = $350 to $$$$
Gears if you wish $300
Lockouts or drive slugsa $150

Hy steer = $250

If you do want a 60/9" axle the prices will be more.
You might want to get a hold of Sunray to get a price on a 60/9. They are in Texas and do very good work..

With complete custom axles the prices are how ever much you want to spend.

I do believe that you can easily have a front and rear 60's built up fairly well for the same price as one of those mini/60 units..

you m9ight want to give Proffitts Cruisers in Colorado a call about axles. they do good work as well.

There was a Guy from Wyoming or montana (I can't remember which) at last years Glitter gulch Gambol that had a VERy nicely built 60 that proffit did.

THAT WAS ME! PROFFITT DID THE SOA, ATLAS, AND BODY ARMOUR. HE DOES GREAT WORK.

Ahhhh,
Right on, go full width 60/44 and never look back..
