I took the 3 EXTRA clutches I have, besides the one in there now that doesn't seem to work and I put them all in the oven on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes. Then I took them outside and tried each one looking for one that would be hard to turn. They were all equally easy to turn just like the one that's in there now. I will try and see if Ty can help me rebuild one and for backup I think I'll take one apart and fill it with sand instead of oil. That ought to keep the plick from slipping!:D

Sent you a PM. I had to use my impact drill carefully to get them screws outs.

Whoa!

I would have done ~200 degrees.

Keep us posted; I can come over again this weekend for the re-fire.

Crap! Started up on the 2nd pop and had no unusual noises or leaks but immediately proceeded to overheat!

This was right after refilling a drained cooling system, correct?

For whatever reason, best thing to do on a 3FE in that situation is to start it, wait for the temp gauge to move just a bit, then re-open the system and top off (sometimes a lot). They seem to get a "vapor lock" type of thing happening after a drain & refill.

I lied! I went out and pulled the T-stat out and reassembled. Now, even with a fan clutch that doesn't seem to work I can't get it even close to overheating.

:confused::hmm:

Temp gauge is coming up to halfway (as it should)??

The more I think about it, the more I think everything's fine. Just "burps" in the system from being down for so long.

I'm gonna try a fan clutch disassembly when I get home today. That hopefully will be the end of this chapter.:)

Ty that clutch from the 80 fits my fan perfect. It has about 1/2 to 3/4 inches of extra distance from the flange forward towards the radiator but there is more than enough room in there for it to fit, in fact I think it will be a better fit than stock. I'm "baking" it right now to test it's cool vs hot performance. If it seems to lock up when hot I'm gonna put it in.

Very good.

I think my oven test is flawed. Anyhow, when the one Ty gave me to try didn't seem any different than the one that was in there I left it in and reinstalled the other T-stat I had that seemed to open much more in the boiling water than the one that was in before. I let it warm up and then held it at 3K rpm for at least five minutes and it hovers around the halfway point on the temp gauge, and the candy thermometer I can't seem to get it very hot no matter where I tape it. I quick drive around town couldn't produce higher temps but I'll bet the minute I start crawling up hills on a hot day I'm gonna have trouble. I'll test it Saturday somewhere. :meh:

1;19 am and my back is all fxxxed up! No more bending over under the hood and crawling around on the ground. :crybaby:

Well duh...

Shouldn't "hover": should steadily come up to halfway and then stick there solid as a rock. ANY slight movement above halfway is an early indication of trouble. Also, any dips under halfway after warm-up (while coasting downhill, say) indicate a faulty or misinstalled t-stat.

I'll bet you're fine. :meh:

Drove it to work today and around town. Seemed pretty stable right at the 2nd mark like you said. I'm gonna still try to get one of the clutches busted open and rebuilt. You can't tell me that clutch is good if I can stop it with my gloved hand after it's fully warmed up. Curtis where do you get your R-12 ? Another A/C guy on mud told me my system only holds 1.5 lbs of R-12 and it should be easy to just stay with it instead of 134.

A quick dip in the coolant after you let the pressure out will tell you- your gauge should be 1/3 to 1/2 the normal range once warm.

Hope your back gets better.

Curtis where do you get your R-12?

On Ebay.

I did the online EPA certification (takes an hour or so and is actually pretty informative) so that I could legally purchase and use it; three of my rigs have R-12 A/C.

Wow, that's "cool". So how much is a pound and a half of R-12??

I'm taking the G-kids to see Crater Lake today but will be around the house tomorrow tinkering. Maybe find a hill nearby to really run up my rigs temperature under load and watch(because they say a watched pot never boils).
:D

This is where I did the online training (EPA Clean Air Section 609):

EPA 609 Certification

They email you your certification number immediately upon completion, and then later mail you a nifty wallet-sized certification card. :hillbilly:
