This is a very bad sound

This started tonight while idling in the drive-thru. It sounds expensive, :bang: any ideas?

This can't be good - YouTube

this is a 99 LX470 (122k) that I have had for three months. Stock except tires and lack of running boards. I have changed the oil, transmission and AHC suspension fluids while I have had it and that's it. Prior to that I have no knowledge of the upkeep though it appeared at purchase to be well cared for. I have wheeled it a couple of times doing things that jeeps on the trail couldn't, most recently about two weeks.

That's about all the background I can give.

change with throttle

yes it does. Drivable, or tow to the shop? Also, I am not certain that the water pump/timing best was done at 90k, and don't know if there is a way to be sure. Would it make this sound as it died? I seem to recall my old ford escort doing that right before it ate all the valves. (twice)

definately sounds like a bearing. Which is the big question. How is the A/C working? Trying to help eliminate sources? Anything other than the A/C and I would have it towed.

A/C

A/C blows cold, though the control is broken, it's set at 75 and won't adjust. That said I will turn it off and see if the noise goes away, would it go away?

between the AHC going out this week and now this I can't wait to hear what my wife has to say when I pick her up tomorrow in her Jeep... She was not as excited about an old 100 series as I was.

It is possible, again depends on which bearing is making the noise. If it is a bearing at the pully connected to the belt, it could keep making noise. I would give it a shot. If the noise stops, you just found the point of origin. Also have a look at the fan. Is there any play? Wobbly? do all the belts seem tight?

It might but it's still spinning the belt over the gear drive. I think it's more likely that it changes frequency or something instead of all together going away.

Also, I don't see any danger in driving with a bad bearing in the A/C. But I'd also so the same for an alternator and most other accesories. Should it be a bad bearing from something driving by the belt, the biggest and scariest would be the timing belt in general.

Problem is determining where the noise is coming from. There are 7 different pulleys in the same area. And no way to isolate each. Is it the AC, Alternator, or something in the timing, water pump....The two more common tend to be the fan or the AC.

Looking in my FSM right now for other ideas....

Check your idler pulley, mine failed a few months ago and it happened to last 140 miles before completely failing pulling into a dealership. Belt came off right when I shut the engine off. I'm not sure about the squeal but the rattling noise is very similar to what I had.

I switched to synthetic oil when I changed the oil. I was thinking that rattle was the lifters tapping after that change, if not that's a good indication this is the idler pulley.

Synth shouldn't affect the sound of the motor. If anything mine sounded more smooth and natural, definitely not more rattle'y.

sounds something similar to when my idler pulley seized. Pull the belt off and test everything by hand.

thanks for the link, if I can find the time I will take care of it myself, if not then I will at least find the time to know what's needed before taking it someplace. You guys have been a great help.

One thing I've used to find a noise in the engine compartment is by taking a metal tube and putting up to my ear, then point the tube towards the area to isolate where the sound is coming from.... Worked a few times on other vehicles, best of luck

I havnt had to do that in about 14 years... LOL! The FSM will tell you how to pull the belt and gives a generic description on how to inspect the individual components. Perhaps some one can give better details. I would be looking for excessive play in the pulley, is it wobbly, does it rotate smoothly and freely, does it make any noise when you rotate it, etc. Hope this helps!

ok so I am going out of town tomorrow which meant I had no time to deal with this... it went to the shop. Idler pulley and the fan clutch both bad, pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks all for the help, hopefully I can return the favor someday.
