First off, no BS. True story. Swear on it. Etc.

Folks have a 1994 Toyota Camry 4 cyl (US built if it makes any difference). They hadn't been driving it for a long while, so it'd been sitting in their townhouse complex.

When my mom went to start it, she noticed a cat go screaming out from underneath it. Figuring no big deal, she drove around town doing errands. On getting home, heard some odd noise so popped the hood.

Inside the engine bay were two kittens.

They were sitting on the strut bar/frame, and scurrying back and forth underneath the engine on the subframe that supports the two front struts. They had been in there the whole time she was driving around.

No lie. Picture of cat scratch marks attached. You can see marks all over the engine bay, so they were climbing all over the place.

So that brings me to the problem. At idle it surges real bad. Not enough to die, but enough to get decent RPM swings. Driving it doesn't feel too bad, but there's a slight stumble to it.

My first thought was vacuum leak, but did the propane test and couldn't get the engine to change, so not sure if it's a vacuum leak (unless they hit a hose I can't reach with my propane torch). Haven't tried the carb cleaner method.

Next thought is something wiring related. Anyone got any suggestions?

I think it's the 3rd kitten. :meh:

Cat stuck in the MAF? :hhmm:

Only started after the trip with the kittens, which is why I'm more inclined to believe it's something caused by them than just a dirty MAF. Though no doubt the MAF and IAC motor need to be cleaned up anyway.

C4 fixes most these pesky issues.

I'm thinking a hairball might be an issue...

I wouldn't be surprised if that thing now has a Kittylytic converter now.. There is never just 2 kittens :(

My wife would like to know where the kittens are now? Were they successfully relocated to a new home?

They ran off. Did not want to be removed from the vehicle, took a broom and gentle prodding. Once they were out of the engine compartment, they were gone.
