I have a serious problem. Just a few hours ago, some jackass kid threw an egg at my Blue FJ while I was taking one of my best friends home. (he lives in a bad neighborhood) I then immediately went to the car wash, I got there within 10 minutes, and proceeded to wash off the egg mess. Mind you, it's about 41 degrees outside and it's nightime here in Chicago. When I finished spraying down the truck, I noticed that the damn thing ATE HOLES in a small part of the hood where the egg hit! The actual paint is razor thin to the point of being laughable. I've been egged in a Chevy G-20 before, and the paint didn't get any holes in it! What should I do? Should I go to the dealer and complain about the poor quality of the paint (I've only had the thing for 3 months), and if I do, do I even mention the egg? Should I file an insurance claim and get it fixed w/ a $250 deductible? Or do I let my mechanic do some patch work on the holes? The last thing I want to do is let the holes rust up....

I also have a blue one. I take it wheeling with MAJOR tree branch action. It leave rub marks, but nothing too bad. Maybe you just got a bad batch. There is a touch-up paint pen available. I just got one to fix all my rock chips. It's cheap. Maybe it will work for you?

I tripped and my fingernail scratched the paint on my Blue FJ down to the metal. HUM???

thin paint

I noticed Toyota trucks recently have had some thin paint, my '03 4runner (black) is going to need a repaint if I ever decide to sell it . . it appears like they are using a one-stage paint system.

FYI: The first year of the new Tacoma body style did have a paint recall for some blue trucks. I don't know the specifics, but you may want to look into it, since you could be seeing the same issue.

fj is not a land cruiser. it's a small, cheap tacoma with skin from a califonia design firm. no better or different than a h3 hummer.

Take it to the dealer. They could have had "film build" issues when yours was painted. Toyota and PPG/Dupon constantly monitor film build, and adjust accordingly, but yours may have slipped through. They have special equipment the will measure the thickness of the paint.

If you don't get it fixed now, you WILL have delamination in the future. If the paint isn't thick enough, the UV will bleed through to degrade the Primer, which then delams -- An example is late 80' and early 90's Chevy trucks.

Tacoma metallics are a Base Coat/Top Coat application -- wet on wet. The solid colors - Red and white -- are a single coat. Last I checked, the black was actually a metallic.

Why even respond? It's his first post. He won't be back. I guess his motto is "Ignorance is bliss".:flipoff2:

I can't speak as to the quality of the FJ paint, however an egg thrown at a car will scratch it in a circle pattern, ALWAYS.

Zack

I've seen an egg leave a very distinctive circular fracture pattern in a factory BMW paint job.

My Voodoo SEEMS to have normal thickness of paint in all areas. You may indeed have thin paint on your FJ, but that is NOT the problem with the egg damage.

That said - YES - an egg thrown at ANY car with NORMAL paint will fracture the paint if it hits directly and at enough velocity. As the egg hits, the front section caves and the sides of the shell as they contact the paint act as razor blades. No joke. I used to egg a lot of cars as a kid and I never knew that until a couple years ago. I sincerely felt bad about it.

I don't think that most people that throw eggs at cars realize what the eggs actually do, therefore have mercy on the 'kid' you catch someday.

Maybe sell your beloved Hummer, and get a penile implant? A lot cheaper, and probably more effective!
