I ordered a Beck Arnley thermostat for 87 FJ 60. It came w/ a round rubber gasket. the one I took out had no gasket. where does this gasket go? also, is there no gasket for the gasket cover thing?

The round o-ring sits on top of the thermostat when in place on the lower part of the housing. Then the top goes on along with a gasket and some silicone to insure a good seal!

The gap in the next photo is good. The rubber o-ring squishes which is what you want.

yikes!

the thermostat that was in there was upside down! so there is a gasket that between the upper and lower housing where you use silicone? thx for the great pics!

First the thermostat goes in (right side up), then the square paper gasket, then the round rubber gasket, then the top of the housing. You can use silicone or not. If the surfaces are smooth and not pitted just the gasket works fine.

to much of that silicone gasket maker will end up in the cooling system and cause more problems, like heater core clog radiator clog and so on. again i'll promote the copper cote spray gasket application to the factory (toyota) t-stat gasket and be done with it. also there are a variety of after market o-ring gaskets and would only (thicknesses differ) use a toyota one.

You'll like how the engine warms up with the gasket in there right. Warms up quickly and stays in the normal range. Presto!

the permatex "fast-tac" red liquid stuff works very well on the actual thermostat housing gasket. Also if you have a bench top grinder with a wire wheel ...use that to lightly clean the surface of the thermostat housing (they part you remove). I use a benchtop grinder wire wheel to clean the threads on the bolts.
