I don't know the answer, but I love that you are asking it. Mine came with a funky 70s insert that i kept and I did something similar to the these on my first 40 years back. I know the originals are iconic, i've always found them clunky.

Thanks for that picture, that is the VW one I was looking for! Thinking about going that route vs replacing the cracked light.

Delancy used later style VW lights @ 74. I used the later year ones on my 40. I kept snapping off the big 40 lights and I had a box of spare VW ones. They look and work great for a 55.
