High desert dreaming in the swamps.
For those of you who have been on Mud a while, you may know me. But for those who've joined in the last 6 or 7 years, I'm really no one.

I've been a Cruiser guy since I was nearly 3 when my folks bought a brand new '72 FJ40 at Lyons Toyota in Boulder. My cousin still has that 40 in the family. I've had numerous Cruisers all my driving life: a '76 FJ40, an '83 'FJ40 with factory power steering and air, an '84 HJ47 troopy and an '84 FJ40 LX being the main characters with numerous others coming and going while I had the above Cruisers. I've owned, lived and driven Cruisers all over America and Australia.

My last Cruiser was the LX (you can find the thread to the sad day when I sold her here on Mud) which I sold many years ago. I've not had a Cruiser since: longest I've gone in my life without one. But the monkey never got off my back. The new owner has become a very good friend and he keeps me in the loop with his LX.... but that doesn't feed the monkey.

When I finally got ready to buy another Cruiser, they had gone price-silly. So after looking long and hard, I bought a CJ-8 Scrambler and built it from the ground up as close to a Cruiser as I could. But it wasn't a Cruiser. The monkey wasn't satisfied: he didn't like eating junk food.

So I sold the Scrambler. My son and I bought an IROC for his first car and restored it: 305/5speed, Corbeau seats, Dakota Digital. Great fun to drive. But it's my son's, and the monkey wasn't satisfied with someone else's food.

So I decided I would get the one Cruiser I've always dreamt of but never had: a 43/46. I've been looking for about 2 years now: nearly buying 3 different ones. I realised I likely didn't want a South American one due to the rust and often shoddy build quality and I prefer RHD for comfort. I've spent much of my life in Australia and brought two different 40s (the LX and the 47) back with me to the States. I've owned similar numbers of RHD and LHD Cruiser, but always preferred RHD.

So this mostly limited me to a JDM 43, but they have their own issues. I'd looked at several, nearly buying a BJ46 but deciding it was more project than I wanted to take on right now. Further ideals were factory hardtop, H55, power steering and ideally air conditioning. But most important was minimal rust repair, minimal modifications and preferably mostly done: in a change from every Cruiser I've ever owned, I was looking for Bought, not Built. I want to be able to play, improve and enjoy; not rebuild, re-imagine and replace.

Back in October, a 43 came on BaT which seemed to tick all the boxes. So I watched. I try never to bid until the end as that simply drives the price higher. I had in mind what I'd pay, but before we even got near the end she passed that limit. Ciest le vie, not meant to be.... though it haunted me; being so close to everything I wanted in a 43. I even had a couple screen shots of it I'd look at from time-to-time.

Fast forward to two weeks ago: that same 43 was back on BaT..... Devine Cruiser God intervention? Random hapenstance? Who knew. So I watched. And I waited.

Last day of the listing: I made my move. I had in mind my limit. We went toe-to-toe. I was winning. And then a third stepped in the ring: hope was fading. But I kept swinging.

And for the KO: Chamba. This 43 I had dreamt about for 9 months was now mine...ironically for exactly what I sold the CJ8. Cruiser God intervention? Random numerical chance? Who knows, you tell me.

It's scheduled to be picked up Saturday, and delivered Monday. I've always wished I'd done a build thread on every rig I've done. But by the time I get motivated to do so it's mostly built. So here's my opportunity; but with the twist of it hopfuly being more of a 'Bought Thread' than a 'build thread'. I'll document the process as I make her my own and improve her where I think she needs it.

So here's the start of my thread: I've already set in motion factory weather strip, factory window rubber, factory front and rear turn signals, 8274-50 (I'm an OEM snob: fair warning). So the monkey isn't really back: he's always been on my back. Now it's just feeding time.

The trick I found my friend to get that monkey off your back is to strap it down and feed it Adventure. A good tall friend helps as well! Enjoy the heck out of the new FJ43 coming soon.

And then, out of the blue, after I won the auction....I received this in the mail. Thank you again Eric.

And the other food I tried to feed the monkey will be on BaT shortly once I get it all detailed. I do absolutely love this truck, and I really love driving it. She's been my daily when I'm not working since I finished her. But now I've got too many cars and not enough space.

@Chamba. Great start to your thread… I look forward to seeing those changes…best of luck. I know we have bumped heads on BAT before. Happy to hear about this one !!

@Living in the Past I'm 6'6". In most LHD 40s I find it a tight fit with the stock 17" wheel between the door and my knee when I'm using the clutch. Whereas with a RHD 40, my clutch leg is pointing to the middle of car, so I've got acres of room.

Additionally, RHD leaves your throttle foot against the door, so you've always got a comfortable resting spot. I'm also right handed, so I like having my dominent hand on the steering wheel.

As an added bonus with 2F-equipped 40s, the kick vent blows hot air on the left, because that's where the exhaust comes out of the engine and the engine louvres are right above it. The right-side kick vent blows noticeably cooler because all that hot exhaust is on the other side of the engine bay. The floor/firewall is also much cooler on the right side because the exhaust goes down the left side of the frame on '79 and newer.

Lastly, when did you last see a '75-'84 RHD 40 with Cruiser Lean? You likely haven't, because they are designed by the left-side-of-the-road Japanese with all the stationary weight to be on the left to counter balance the driver sitting on the right. When you then put the driver on the left, you get Cruiser Lean.

It's been some time since I've been on Mud. I didn't realise I still had Santa Fe on there. I'll get it changed to reflect the swamps. I'll be retiring back west, but I'm here at least until the kids finish school.

Seller just texted me: the 43 was picked up 15 minutes ago. Anyone who happens to see it on the truck in Tx, La, Ms, Al or Fla will get a free like if they post a pic here.

This exact event happened to me when mine was en route to NJ from Seattle…it was in Montana. You’ve got to be a tad excited?. He’ll, I’m just waiting for a mirror arm and I’m smilin’

@Chamba ,

Liked your explanation of RHD choice. Lucky that some manufacturers decide to offer a driving position on the other side for the rest of us.

In addition to Land Cruisers I also like Land Rovers (yeah, I know). Long time ago I spotted an early Land Rover 110 with the sliding windows and the spare on the hood-- parked for sale outside an industrial park, gleaming in the sun like a polished P-51 Mustang. The seller was a metal artist/sculptor and had taken it to a company that polishes milk-carrying truck tankers, had it stripped and the entire aluminum body polished like a mirror. Multiple test drives however discouraged me as it was RHD. Later on I got my fix and added some LHD models to the fleet, but obviously I still remember passing on it to this day and kick myself for being such a wuss just 'cause the steering wheel was on the "wrong" side.

Congrats on the next project !

@knuckle47 your story is what made me think of it. Chances are slim and it's uncanny that someone saw yours. But you never know.

Drop an air tag in it….you can follow it. Well THATS an afterthought..

Yea, it was the friend of the woman I got it from…she called her and said…. “I swear I just saw your dad’s truck go by”

Arrived a day early. Not quite as good as I'd hoped, but then that's what buying sight unseen is all about. Still very good bones though I think.

Wouldn't start or idle without choke, but found the accelerator pump push rod had come disconnected. I paper clip later and I was able to drive home from Home Depot.
Power steering pump is growling a bit, so I will explore that. Loads of slop in the steering, so I'll go through that.
Hope the mileage when I picked it up isn't too telling...... dakota digital coming anyway.
More to come.

First few items: removing the silly fenders mirrors, removing the grill badge and rubber nipples from the bumper and adding a factory rain gutters roof bumper.

Last post for tonight: oil bath air cleaner.
Do any of you experts on here know whether the regular air filter will fit if I pull the oil bath out, or do I need the whole air cleaner assembly?
