The Incredible Case of the Disappearing Recall

I just had the recall done today. I had them do the state inspection as well. They didn’t try to upsell me on anything.

Same here local dealer ordered the part last week and scheduled an appt to do mine yesterday morning. I was in and out in an hour and they gave me a desk to work at while I was there. Didn’t try to upsell me on anything 👍

Dumb questions but I'm a little wary of the local dealer. Is the recall mostly based on potential severity of the issue or also prevalence? Is this a relatively rare failure mode?

I'm a little leery of going into the dealer for this and then either: 1) have some issue w/ it like some people seem to be having, 2) have a list of recommended repairs (I use an independent shop for service and would feel then compelled to disposition each recommendation), 3) have something else break.

I'm not sure if I should just fix this now. Or follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" paradigm. Can I just wait until an issue appears (if one appears) and then get it fixed?

There is a chance that if you get in an accident while you have a passenger in the right front seat, that the airbag protecting that person will not deploy. That could seriously increase their injuries in an accident.

Just get the recall done. It's painless and it's the right thing to do to protect your passenger.

Howdy, Hey what is a "state inspection"?

Some states, like MA, requires an annual inspection of your vehicle. Specific safety items must be inspected, along with the OBDII system.

Thank you much. Sound like a good idea in principal.

Like many things, it starts with good intentions but the actual impact on safety is questionable and in exchange you end up expanding the bureaucracy. It isn't clear to me that the benefits are worth the cost, hassle, and governmental intrusion.

That said, the last time I was in Colorado I saw a lot of complete POS vehicles on the road that never would have been allowed in MA. So pick your poison.

1) Give them your VIN and have them order the parts in advance. They can do it and do not need the vehicle. Verify parts are correct prior to appointment
2)why would you be compelled to fix everything on a "recommended" list. That is entirely up to you. If something jeopardizes your safety, I'd like to know about it and I'd fix it. I don't trust dealers much either although mine didn't try to upsell me on anything.
3)Illogical.

A hour? I understand the work (according to my service guy) is booked at 4 hours?

I dropped my LC off at 7:30 AM for the recall plus a state inspection (which takes ~15 minutes or so). I received a call at 9:30 AM that my LC was ready. It doesn't take 4 hours to do this recall.

Got it - thank you - maybe our guys here are a little slow!

It's a very easy job. I was in the dealer for about an hour waiting. Don't even need to remove the passenger seat. Honestly, I wish they would have just handed me the parts and let me do it myself, but that wasn't an option.

OK, I think I understand whats going on - spoke to our service guru here. Apparently when the first of these recalls began it was taking almost 1/2 a day to perform the work. By assigning/training specific team members to just this recall and discovering ways (to KLFs point, not removing passenger seat) to streamline the process, over time the work has been reduced to, as was told to me, around 90 minutes at his particular dealership (maybe longer at Lexus for some weird reason).
