So, being that this was the first time in 16 years that I've gone camping without a single kid, I planned to take full advantage of the complete lack of responsibility to anyone but myself. I made a point of being up and shooting before sunrise each day, which really wasn't that hard to do because the sun didn't rise until 7:00 and all of the grandma's I was camping with turned in by 9:00 each night. I told everyone I give them a knock before sunrise if they wanted to get up and witness it. Whiskey is a hell of a drug though, so when it was time for roll call the next morning, attendance was lacking. Andy, Lou, Bomar and Kevin made it out in time to catch the whole show. The rest...blew it.

Who's Kevin?

All kidding aside, Bomar's old buddy, Kevin, was great to roll with it. He took some great drone vids, and he put up with our nonsense pretty well.

There was pretty heavy cloud cover before sunrise, which can be kind of a crap-shoot. If it's too thick it blocks out the light, but if it breaks up a little then you get the best sunrise. This one didn't disappoint. It was a slow burn to start, but once the color hit the clouds it just erupted for about 8-10 minutes. After that, it was gone. At the peak of color, Bomar went and blew my horn as a last ditch to get team Four Roses out of bed.

I was semi-awake from my serious drunken stupor of a night when Ron knocked on my window. After fishing in my bag for a handful of advil and killing a couple bottles of water, i managed to find my way out of the truck and over to the overlook. The pounding of my head quickly told me there was no way i'd avoid falling off the cliff to certain death without some coffee, so i asked Ron if I had time and bailed to do that when he said yes.

15 mins later, 2 shots and 1 full cup of coffee later, i stumbled back over by Ron, and took a few pics of what was by then turning into a spectacular sunset. After looking at them though, they looked like s***. So i asked Ron what tweaks i needed to make on the camera to get a decent shot. He said quote: "What mode is your camera in?" I replied quote: "uhhhhhhh camera mode??" At that point Ron graciously removed the camera from my grasp, did his thing, and had me taking decent amateur shots in no time. Thanks again for the help man.

Anyway, sunrise was unreal. Hands down the best I've ever witnessed. Only Ron/Lou and i got to the the best 2-3 minutes, and even as good as the pics are, they don't do it justice. My pics are crap compared to Ron's but i'll post anyway.

Taking a 3 day jaunt into Texas and turning it into Homer's Odyssey.

Like all good liars should.....

The board was getting a little stale... Needed to spice things up with a little storytelling....

So, I guess it's time for the legal disclaimer (since I write that crap for a living) to prevent libel/infringement/appropriation claims from those persons who may claim to have taken a similar (though less embellished) trip to big bend ranch state park in early January, 2017.

Carry on.
