LEDs :D

So I got these for $15 each at a place that builds and repairs service truck. I had to cut the hole open in the brackets to 4.5 inches and they fit in. The grommet overhangs on the outside a bit but if they work I think they will be neat. Brake, turn and tail all in one like the original.

Here is something I need if anyone has one.
The little "nipple" that screws to the turn signal switch and allows the horn to contact the steering wheel ring as depicted below. The one on my switch is missing.

on my '72 truck, the horn plate contacts the horn ring on the steering shaft, rather than the blinker switch :hhmm:

is this pic a switch from a later model ?

It is. I adapted a late model shaft and late model box to this truck using a mini truck PS box. I also have an 80 series steering wheel to go in there.

I did not take a pic but I was able to put an FJ60 steering wheel in my 1972 trail truck with the same column you have. I built and adapter to contact the steering wheel with the lid from an pint sized paint can and a piece of rubber hose to isolate it from the steering shaft. The rim on the paint can matched the copper ring on the steering wheel perfectly.:hillbilly:
If I have to take the steering wheel off again for any reason I will take some pics. I did not expect it to work on that truck so I did not document it at all.

I had a few hours in the shop today and spend nearly all of it trying to get the Confer tank mounted. What a beotch. As big as it is, the fit is pretty precise when it comes to having the bolts all line up.
But once I got it in place, I realized I would be unable to reach any of the aluminum fuel fitting I installed and I also need to go from 45 degree fittings to a couple 90s.

Ordered the 90s tonight from Summit Racing. I guess I know what I will be doing AGAIN next Sunday.

Great looking gauge cluster.

Update...
I am losing my mind...

Poser hooked me up with a couple switches I was lacking so I started into the wiring.
I am making progress on the rear harness more than the front. I am running the round LED's that are available from any truck stop as brake, turn and tail lights. Also in the rear I have a fuel selector valve to switch between the front and rear Confer tank. This has a total of five wires running from it. Finally, I am going to run a rear facing LED or some sort of switchable bright off road light to assist me in my backing endeavors. To do all this I am pretty much hacking up and rebuilding a couple burned up rear harnesses I had. This only really helps by giving me a template for length and wire color.

The transfer case i am running is that one from the FJ62 so it has three switches on it. Only one matters to me in the 40 and that is the 4wd indicator so I just clipped the wires on the other senders. The last thing is of course the regular old back up light on the tranny.

Some days I look at this spaghetti and just walk away. Other days I have moments of clarity. Last night was one of those. The rear portion came together easily on paper it has just been time consuming to forage for the plastic couplers and wire ends and then do all the careful soldering and splicing.

I was got so excited last night I worked on it until about 11:30 and then could not sleep as the thoughts of wires raced through my head!

Just ran across this. Great story, photos and restoration. Congrats!

Thanks Steve. I have not been posting much as I have been messing with fuel lines an brake lines mostly. Not much to see. I am running a bunch of JIS fittings for fuel. Something I sort of wish I had not done.

It is tough to get time to work on it. I am all but out of leave for the year and weekends are just packed full of other adventures.

Hugh,

I'm getting ready to do my fuel and brake lines, what is it that makes you wish you had not used those fittings? (don't want to open any other cans of worms) What would you have used instead?

My plan is to use 37 deg flare (JIC) and swageloc style compression.

Great Job, very nice work! Hope mine comes out half as nice.

Yeah, I mis-spoke. They are JIC 37 degree fittings. Due to the fittings on the fuel tanks, the fuel selector and the stock fuel pump it would have been easier, cheaper and imo as goot to just use steel line and short pieces of rubber hose. After all, that is what these trucks run from the factory with success for many years. It has been a headache putting that stuff together and in the end I see no advantage. I just thought it would be cool.

So the wiring has been pretty tough. I have added a removed a bunch of stuff so really I am scratch building a harness.

I made considerable progress this weekend. I have most of it done. Does it work? Dunno.
I have questions about the electronic ignition with the coil and igniter that has come out of a 1985 FJ60. The igniter has four plugs. Two go to the distributor. I think one goes to the starter. I dunno where the other one goes and am unsure which is which.

I also did not install an amp meter. I went with a volt meter instead and really am unsure why I made that decision. I think it is what came in the package deal.

I still have to sort out some of what plugs in where in the steering column, figure out where I want to plug in the gauges (that will be easy) and wire the Painless accessory circuit. It has proven difficult to figure out where to actually mount that and in the end I probably do not really need it but since I have this thing in its current state I may as well add it.

So the next four or five weekends are going to be pretty busy. We will see what I can get done after work. Usually not much.
