As I've stated in a previous thread, I've GREATLY enjoyed my time as YT President but obviously, 4 years is a long time and it's long overdue for new leadership. I intend to wrap up my duties by January 1st and will call for a special election at that time to elect a new President. That person will be up for reelection again in May. If, in the event that no one steps forward in January, Rick Bigelow, your Vice President, will become interim President and the club can try again in May.

Now, that aside, we have much bigger, and potentially more exciting, things to discuss., the big question...

Where should we go from here?

In the last 4 years we have grown the club dramatically, from just 20 paid members, to nearly 100. We have put money in the bank to fund club expenses, charitable donations, and our own events. And, thanks to this forum, have engaged the membership in an online conversation that we rarely could achieve on the old email list. I'm very proud of these accomplishments, and the many people involved who worked so hard to achieve them.

So what's next? What do YOU want?

I often hear "We should have more club runs" but I feel like that wasn't very successful this year. This summer we signed up with NEA land for a Club run every month. Unfortunately, only a few of those were well attended, and one had to be canceled completely do to no participation. How can we improve that? The process to secure weekend rights to trails is not a precise one, signups happen on a first come first serve basis in March and there are many restrictions.

Do we focus on encouraging members to arrange their own trail runs at more convenient times? As Lane and Larry did last month? As Gary did in September? That works out well but will limit us from accessing the private trails. Is there a better process for folks? We are looking for ideas.

Is Fall Gathering everything people want it to be? Is it time for a venue change?

What else would you like to see the club doing? More pub nights and off-trail social get-togethers? Charity work? Perhaps getting involved with a Habitat for Humanity group? Throw some ideas out there.

Are you interested in being able to buy more merchandise? Randy Elkin will be running a pilot program soon that will sell more logo'ed hats, sweatshirts, etc. with the Club logo, as well as some of his other excellent designs. I'm excited for that, personally.

If I had to lay out a priority as I leave my post it would be that we MUST have more people step up into leadership roles. Both on the Board of Directors, as well as for events. None of the Board positions are supposed to go beyond a 2 year term limit. Thankfully, many of our officers, myself included, have stayed on in lieu of leaving the chairs empty. New people bring new ideas and energy to the table and that is a vital part of a clubs long term viability.

I hope that we can use this thread to share and discuss constructive ideas for the future of Yankee Toys.

Thank you.
-Dave

I nominate Dave Morin for President!

Pretty new to the club here, but wanted to thank yourself, the BOD and the clubs members for being so inclusive. It didn't take long to feel welcomed and be a part of your club almost instantly.
Loving the idea of monthly trail rides, but with a wheeling schedule from MAy-Oct. I found it hard to make most of them due to the good weather being here and how that coincides with your summer quickly booking up!
As far as having members arrange their own trail runs, I like the idea but if using the "Yankee Toys" name to book land or trails
I think there needs to be a club official there to be a representative. One thoughtless act or misunderstanding can quickly ruin a club's reputation.
Again being new, I like the Gathering's Venue. Maybe some are bored with the trails or want a new location? I think it's convenient for most of the club since it's sort of Central to it's members.
Social gatherings are great, this should be a focus in the winter months. Would make it alot easier by the spring meeting to be able to put faces and names with screen names.
I would like to see some tech nights as well, I know we all don't drive the same vehicle so that makes it difficult but we all do similar things to our rigs like body work or welding, just another idea.
I love charity work, I do alot of volunteer work. I Volunteer for a number of Boston Boys and Girls Club's events and work for the Boston Boys and Girls Club's Camp Harbor View and we are always looking for volunteer groups. The location is excellent since it is located on a restricted island in the middle of Boston Harbor with amazing views of the city. This could be a weekend day event concluded with BBQ? If interested let me know.
I also do volunteer work with the South Shore's Habitat for Humanity, if the club needed a "In" there, I would be more than happy to get the ball rolling. It so happens that a close friend of mine is the MA CEO. I'm sure she could set something up even if it was out of the state of Massachusetts.
As far as merchandise I think thats a great idea as well. I had heard some ideas of making this fall gathering's logo into a sweatshirt. I would def. be interested in that along with some other YT garb.
I am interested in becoming more involved, I think it would be helpful to some, if the positions that need to be filled title's were posted with a outline of the job's descriptions.
From a new comers prospective, I clearly saw at events the need for more people to step up and help out. It seemed that there were some who did none and some that did all. It's tough when people volunteer their time to make events run smooth and then later look back and feel like they were one of the few who pulled their weight. This leads to volunteers and officials getting burnt out quickly.
Being a part of running a number of fundraising events/volunteer events at the Camp we look back immediately following a event and compile a list of what worked, what didn't and what could we change while it was fresh in our heads. Maybe this is done already, maybe not but I have always found it helpful in planning annual events.
This is long, but I thought it would be helpful. I am happy to help in the future in anyway I can and I had a great season with you all.

Thanks,
Bob

I'd like to see ideas outside of wheeling and charitable work. That is all great but what about just hanging and enjoying peoples company.

I would think that the club could support some pool table time at a gaming place. There has to be other shared interests out there.

My other club has monthly meetings around it's area with great turn out. Would scheduling something like this with some lead time help attendance?

Right now it seems the bulk of people want to join the club and go to fall gathering and that's about it. If that's all that you want to do that's fine but volunteers are burning out at providing this service to you.

I'd love to take office or volunteer but I'm way buried with a new gig and a baby on the way.

That said, I own a pool table and a kegorator so I'd be happy to have a meeting here!

Bob for Prez!

I think it makes sense to chime in here as a VERY part-time participant. I hope I don't sound like an ass, I am just being honest:

I am extremely grateful that the club exists and that on occasion I can join the activities.
Selfishly, I want to have the ability to join club runs (offered monthly or more) when it suits my schedule but don't want the commitment as life is very busy. FG is a lot of fun but not the most important part especially since SWMBO does not camp and I can't afford B&B's in foliage season. Basically, with a job, way too many vehicles and an old half-broken house among many other distractions- I'm probably a pretty lame club member. And I don't feel good about not volunteering to do more but it really isn't going to happen till Megabucks comes in...

I wonder if I'm alone in all this though. And what the solution might be? A tiered system of diehards and "posers" like me? I really don't have the answer but think it is important to open the discussion up.

I'll throw myself in this category; I hope to eventually get more involved, but life often gets in the way of that. I greatly appreciate all the hard work and generosity of all the club officers(and members for that matter), I always come away from any Yankee Toys gathering having had a great time. All that said I'm always happy to lend a hand here and there help out in some small way when ever I can.

I for one would like to see more trail cut/maintenance runs, I sit behind a desk at work and VP of my local club so anytime I can get out and mark trails, cut trees and generally get dirty, i'm in.

Did someone mention a Yankee Toys hoodie/sweatshirt? Let's do it!!! Let me know if you need help.

I nominate Dave Morin for President!
Second!

:bang: I nominate Chris for President. Seriously. At least John had the common sense to follow up on his original post.:bang:

The point of the thread is to solicit your ideas for the club. If it were for Dave's ideas he would have started by saying he intended to remain president..................

I will not be continuing as secretary of YT. Believe it or not there are two year term limits in the bylaws. All officer positions are way past term except the vice presidency that Rick has recently volunteered for.

It's time for membership to step up. Your club, you decide how it's run.

Not that the secretary job is any real work. It's just that I got suckered into it five or more?? years ago when leadership was going through the same cycle. The two new guys (Stew and myself) that showed up at the spring meeting were volunteered for president and secretary (two of us = the only two officer positions filled). At the time the club was still kicking but at a pretty low point. The club is currently at a high point, the only thing that will drag it down is lack of involvement.

Club for me? I'm happy to have the opportunity to get away once a year. Last thing I want to do is structure what free time I have with runs and meets. A loose network of contacts to trade parts and ideas with works just as well for me. I'd be just as happy wrenching alone in my garage on whatever I happen to be interested in at the time.

Harry, Gus, If all you can do is an hour or so, or organizing just one thing, that is a huge help, and does not go unnoticed. Basically, it doesn't get done unless a volunteer does it.

Dave, feel free to remove this post if it looks like it will derail your thread. To recap, my idea would be to have membership step up and have a new slate of officers volunteer. You will have the support of all the current officers. :wrench:

Let's stay on track. While I apprecaite the calls for me to stay on, jokes that they are ;) , obviously that isn't happening.

A) I can't do it anymore.
B) It's time for someone new to take the helm.

Simple as that.

maybe enforcing the term limits is the way to move forward.

What I personally want from the club:

Trail Rides - If I ever get my truck back together I would like to wheel more.

Pub Nights/Meet and Greets - these don't have to be done in a bar. I don't mind having people over to my house or we could do John's with the pool table and keg.

Wrench days/Tech Inspection - I've been to John's, Rick's, Wally and Junior's place and I'm headded up to Pat Thursday to work on stuff and its as much fun as wheeling.

Volunteering - I like the idea of habitat for humanity. If someone was to schedule this I would make every attempt to go. I have done it before through work and has a good time.

I have been in the role of Treasurer for 3 years now. I have had a good time doing it but I too am ready to step down. The point when it really takes up a lot of my time is the Fall Gathering. Other than that is a pretty easy job.

YES! I agree with all of it! (especialy the part where you come up and help with my rig)

I nominate Jay for President!

my 2 cents. I think the club is doing alright I know FG is our big yearly event but the spring meeting is usually well attended and we can't forget Kina's solstice run in June. ( I have yet to make it too due to it being our busiest time of year at work) so that makes 3 major club enents a year that draw us out..

I think our club is so diverse and covers so many makes styles and attitudes of vehicles its hard to plan an all encompassing schedule.I think we should keep what we got going now (FG, Spring meeting, Kina's) and use our club to network the Toyota thing and maybe those looking to wheel every week end (which I can't) maybe join up with some of the more encompassing 4 wheel drive clubs, which a lot are already doing.

to me wrenching on my truck is as much fun as actually getting on the trail. I have a long drive to just get tothe trail so a couple hours here or there is usually spent int he garage. I like Jim like the net work this club provides.

unfortunately the presidents office has to am real high to get the mean line. it takes a fair amount of work and the right attitude to deal with New England personalities. Dave you have done an exceptional job thank you now don't disappear like every other president has done. Stew who. Dave Beattie whats he look like??

so with that in mind I nominate Sheri for president. what she has done to incorporate the children into our obsessions' has been awesome!! if the Club needs to transition I would feel very comfortable with Sheri involved in the thinking pool.

I for one would like to see more trail cut/maintenance runs,

The trail maintenance days were/are some of my favorite club events, it only takes a few people to get a lot done. I'd glady commit to a few sundays this spring/summer/fall.
The club gathering in Brattleborough, VT last winter was good time; given the large area that Yankee Toys covers it seems more realistic to me to have a few smaller gatherings in addition to the bigger ones, through out the Yankee Toys territory.
Club wrench days would be really cool, learn a thing or two, help out fellow club members and enjoy the company.

I second Jay for Prez.

I'm still thinking there are other activities that we all can enjoy.

Today it came to me that attending car shows might be fun. We drive some pretty diverse vehicles of all styles and I know that going to a few local car shows would be well received.

We have a hamburger place up here that has scheduled shows all summer. Music, 50/50 raffle and some really cool cars. One guy build a 3/4 replica of a Buick in his garage and registered it. Don't ask me why.

We've got 40s, Jason and his 45, Tim and his diesel troopy, Nate and his beat to s*** mini, just to name a few.

If we can identify a few good shows around New England and work up a schedule I'd make every effort to attend them.

I like car shows, but if people find it hard to make wheeling trips on a Saturday in the summer, will they not find it hard to make car shows?
I like doing the "non wheeling" stuff in the winter, IE: Tech stuff, Vehicle inspections, pub meet and greets and so on.
Maybe we split it up by doing a social day or night of pool or bbq, a charitable volunteering day/night and what not per season? That way we hit a wide range of activities that people wanted to do without leaving anyone/thing out?
One thing I think thats important to me, is the common interest of wheeling and keeping this interest alive and well. That being said I do think it's important that we do a few trail cleanups/maint. trips since we use these trails.
I can't commit to too many "social" gatherings, I think one or two are cool but beyond that I find it hard enough to make time to hang out with the members of my own "He Man Women Haters Club".
