I came across an article on The Drive, 7 American Roads to Drive Before You Die. A good article, but these are all paved roads you could drive in your Camry. So, I'd like to start an ongoing thread of off-roads you have to wheel before you die.

The writers need to get out more. Az HWY 191 Also known as Devils Hwy 1000 turns in 94 miles. Sucks in a Land Cruiser but total adrenalin on a moto.
Wow, that stokes a few memories. The reason they call it the devil's hwy...it used to be Hwy 666. In the early 90s, it was renamed Hwy 191. I wore out that road between Clifton and Alpine, and the off-road trails. Not wheelin' per se, but chasing elk/turkey or scouting for them. I dented the skid plate nearly up to the oil pan on one of those trails in my '91 4Runner.

Lucky man, A great area to hunt or explore with a twisty hwy as a bonus.

Hwy 666 Political correctness - :flush:

@TailsWCU what was the Overlanding trip that you found up in WV? It was like a couple hundred miles and looked really awesome.

I did the Mojave Road in California in my old 4Runner. Great trip, I'd like to do it again in the 80.

Pics? I have some pics of my '91 4Runner in the Sonoran desert, but I'll have to look a little harder to find them. I've driven through, but never off-roaded the Mojave desert, it's much different than the Sonoran.

Unfortunately, no... I worked on a classified program so my phone could not have a camera... I know... It was picturesque and worth going back to, Al has it listed in his link. There were (2) 4Runners, (2) Tacomas, and a full size GMC truck. The GMC struggled in several areas because it was too big for the trail.

My bucket list trail doesn't involve driving, except to get there. I plan to do the A/T when I retire...the whole thing at one time.

You ought to watch the movie "Wild"; it's a good flick. It's a true story about a woman that takes on the PCT. Where she enters the PCT was about 5 miles from my home in CA. As a bonus, you get to see Reese Witherspoon's boobs.

whoo hoo

Between you and Matt's advice to get out of the doghouse at a candlelit Waffle House, we're going downhill. :flush: Evidently, no one told me today was "Take your Beer to Work Day". Between the Army, Marine Corps, and Clemson, this club will never be refined to a gentlemanly standard. :bang:

Now pardon me while I get on Netflix to find Wild.

I've done parts of the PCT I grew up about 5 miles from the entrance of part of it in Angeles National Forrest.

I also did quite a bit in the san bernardinos and out in Anza Borrego.

@CharlestonG8R I did most of the mojave trail in a square body suburban I don't remember any parts where it was too large for it??

Maybe i'm getting old

We were there in 2008 and sections of the trail had eroded pretty badly. Also, he had trouble getting under some low Joshua tree branches and there were some sections with some loose sand where we had to snatch him out. This would have been west of Fort Piute before getting up on the plain. Did you enter from Needles or the west end of the trail?

Gotcha..... I did it back in the 90s in high school. I would imagine it looked a bit different now.

I also see it was a IFS truck.... those chevy IFS in stock or generic lift form do not do well in soft sand due to their weight so I can see that. We were in a solid axle rig. We did the west end of the trail I believe

That's cool. It's still a neat trail, for sure! And there was nobody else out there. Did you make it to the hippie bus? That was... Weird... We didn't follow the trail all the way to Barstow, we got off in Baker because it was raining hard and we were concerned about flash flooding.
