Some Love em, others Hate em. Some want one one every street corner and others want em all melted down. What do you have, what to you want? Discuss.

I would like the option of being able to CC when driving my school bus, don't want to end up like the bus driver in Alabama.

Few have the history in active politics that I have. I prefer to keep it separate from my Toyota wheeling. Don't see much good out of us picking at this scab in this forum.

Fair enough Jim

I initiated this thread after several discussions with other members who enjoy shooting and wanted to be able to meet up. But I welcome any discussion. There is a very active P&R subforum here on Mud where more philosophical scabs can be well picked. One thing I see that is common in the Toyota Community is a shared love of a lot of similar things outside of Toyota 4x4s, Guns and Motorcycles seem to be two of those.

Anyways, I am a gun owner and would like to do more shooting than I do now to keep and improve my skills. I had my first experience with an over under shotgun the other day attempting to hit clays which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Been a gun owner all my life and likely have more than most. Meeting up to shoot, etc., I'd have no problem with. I'd just hate to see a discussion of gun politics divide rather than unite us when we have so much else in common. I took your message to mean the latter. My apologies if I was mistaken.

Yeah my first post probably invited political discussion. Let's keep things about guns as much as possible. I have no problems with light political commentary like what Doug had to say. I was taking a cue from a popular thread in another clubhouse.

Here is a good place for political commentary. Be careful. Once you go in, you may never come out.

I was about to pull the trigger (pun intended) on an AR-15 in early December (regretting not doing it now), but now will likely wait till late this year or early next year for prices to stabilize. Looking for recommendations on brands/models etc. I'm not really interested in building one, just want to get in to a solid mid priced package.

This is what I was going to order. They were around $1100-$1200 when available. http://www.colt.com/ColtLawEnforcement/Products/ColtLawEnforcementCarbine.aspx

I've liked the reviews of newer Colts. It looks like they put the quality into what matters.

Potato guns are super fun! Hairspray works best. AR's and potatoes for everyone!

And Jonathan, Sig 5.16 is a great choice for you.

I agree. Stick with a piston system out here. Makes for a much more reliable rifle out here in the desert. I like to go shooting whenever I can. This ammo shortage is slowing me down a bit though.

That sig looks really nice. I'm a little torn on caliber. 5.56 vs 7.62. Ammo cost not being a factor what should I GE and why. I like the increased power and range of 7.62.

Well right now neither of those calibers are very available. 5.56 allows for quicker follow ups and flies pretty flat. 7.62 is better if theres wind though. What kind of ranges are you shooting?

I currently have a Stag AR in 5.56 which has worked very well for me. But a friend of mine recently ordered one of these.

I am waiting to see it but having an AR you can switch from 5.56 to .308 in a minute would be kind of cool. Watch the video.

The other thing that interests me is old military rifles. I have a 1903A3 and a Swiss K31. I am thinking of trying to get a M1 Garand from the CMP for $650.

I also have a couple of 1911's, a Browning Hi Power, a H&K P7, and a Ruger Bisley in .45 LC. I like guns too. :)

I'm being an optimist on availability and hope things will be better a year or so from now, which is also when I'll be purchasing. I can't really speak to distances but can speak to what type of shooting I want to do. I'm not purchasing it for home defense, I have hand guns for that. Zombie
Apocalypse on the other hand.... I'm not really interested in close range as much as longer range target shooting. 400-600 yards or so. With followup so i really want a semi-auto. I'm reading that .223/5.56 is actually better at long range. Hmm.

I have a pair of those K31's, one beach wood the other walnut. Probably the nicest shooting surplus rifle a person can buy. I have the older 1911 model Swiss rifle too, made in 1915 it will be 100 years old here pretty soon and still shoots as good today as back then.

Those CMP rifles can be a bargain but here as of late the lower end rifles have been pretty rough for rack grade 650 investment. Best part is there's no shortage of new stock sets you can buy so as long as the bones are good there wouldn't be much of a problem.

When shopping for an AR it's important to remember each one of them are all built off the same basic patent. The uppers and lowers are generally all the same and interchangeable. The big differences will be the tolerances the certain manufactures hold to while building them. Some higher end ones will feature milled lowers receivers and others use the cast ones. There's plenty out there to choose from and the different options are staggering, DPMS, Olympic Arms, Smith & Wesson, Rock River and Bushmaster to just name a few of the big ones. For your first one I would say to stick with the 5.56/223. The 308 is fun but the ammo costs will start to add up fast. Those are not your only options either, AR's have been chambered in tons of different cartridges in the last few years, again... Staggering options! I also don't think a piston driven rifle offers much advantage to a casual shooter except a higher overall cost. They feel somewhat different during recoil, nothing big and theres no boing in your ear muffs! There's really no accuracy advantage to be had with them either and the old gas system is still serving millions of people and our soldiers very well after all these years.

I have a M&P 15T that's suppressed if you would like to shoot it sometime. It's not set up for long range work but it's a blast to shoot anyways!

I too would like to get the lead out a bit more than I have in the last two years and would be all in for range day......... When it warms up just a little bit! LOL

In general the bigger and heavier (with good ballistic shape) the bullet the less it is effected by wind. That's why snipers usually use the .50 BMG.
