I figure most of you have garages to put your 80s in. I have a few questions about garage size.

I currently have a 2 car tandum garage, which works perfectly for my situation, when I just park the 80 in there...but that's about to change. I'm about to end up with a standard 2 car (side to side) garage and I'm curious how this is going to work out.

My current tandum garage is wide enough for me to walk about the Land Cruiser and still have shop tables, and is long enough for me to work around front and behind it, jwith more than enough room...which was really nice. But I worried that with a standard 2 car side x side garage, I'll barely be able fit the 80 inside, much less be able to work around it.

What size garages do you have (especially depth) and how does that work for you with the 80?

I have a typical suburban two car garage (two separate doors so maybe a hair wider). The 80 is shorter than it looks so I have been able to put 24" shelves at the back of mine without issue. Fit fine but working on it can be a little cramped.

An issue I did run into is door height. After putting OMEs on, I couldn't get back into the garage with a Yakima rack on top (their biggest basket type). So I ended up swapping it out for the smaller basket we had on my wife's pilot. For more major trips I have to swap it back. A pain but only a few times/yr.
 
Ya, I found with my lift and relatively short rack, I am less than an inch clearance with a 7 foot tall garage and testing in other 7 foot tall garages, I've found that if the door sags a bit, I'm screwed.
 
Yes, It's the door height that's the limiting factor for the 80. I've got about 7" to play with right now with stock size tires on.

We're going to be fitting either 285/75 R16 or 255/85 R16, either of which runs right around 33". I'd like to get one of the roof racks that provides the option of no side bars. Then I'll see what's left in terms of clearance. I'd like to go with a 2.5" lift, but I think we'll run out of clearance.

We're in luck, because we're a one vehicle family. We do have a 2-car garage and teh way things are set up, I may just rehab it by putting in an I-beam to gain another 6" or so of clearance and go to a single door.

If you have to have 2 vehicles, I'd make the 80 fit by swapping the other vehicle to something smaller, which is what my wife insists will happen if I ever have to commute regularly. It will probably sit outside. But who cares? It's not the Landcruiser!:flipoff2:
 
I built a 1500sqft garage with 3 9x10 doors and it still dosn't fit :doh:
 
It's really not THAT big. I used to have a 2000 Jaguar XJR that was both wider and longer. Our garage isn't that big (single door two car) and the 80 easily fits with my wife's MPV.

In regards to garage doors, most openers can be adjusted to travel further upwards. If it fits through the opening, the door should adjust equally high.
 
depends on whether your double garage will be a 1 or 2 door setup. with the single double wide door, at least you can orient either rig to either side should you need more room. with double doors, it might be more of a challenge. my 80 with heavies & 315s fit under the std 7' height. would feeler gauge room if i had an oem roof rack...but i dont. when i had a yak basket, it hung on the ceiling until it was needed. had enough room to do motor work & brakes, but not wide enough for an axle job i dont think. my 80 with front arb was still shorter than the wifes sienna. add a rear tire carrier to that...and itd be a tight fit once the door closes.
 
Well, my main question is not so much will it fit at all, but how easy will it be to work on it, walking around it, accessing things like having the tailgate down, etc, with a standard depth 2 car garage.

In all the houses we've looked at to rent, it's starting to look like garage size varies widely, including the depth. But newer homes seem to have shallower garages. Surprisingly shallow. One house single car garage had a depth of only something like 15 feet.

So I'm kind of wondering, first depth would be the minimum that you can go and still reasonably work on your 80 with the garage door closed.

Doors are more standardized than the garage space itself and even they vary. I have a fairly standard 16' x 7' door. But my garage was an add-on after they moved the house in on top of a new basement, near the house sank on the backfill, so the door opening isn't exactly square. I lose a little with the way the slab sets.

I also gain a little because there is a walkout from the basement, so it's wider (the door is from the side). It's also the same width as the house, so it's longer than many garages. Take a look at what you see and they do come bigger if you hold out for that.

If I got more crap out, I'd have even more room
 
Our old condo had what I called the one car closet. Something like 9.5' x 19.5'. It would go in but nothing else with it. And best to have your passenger get out before so you could leave a little extra room to open the driver's door once inside.

Our new house has a 25'x30' Plenty of room to work even with a second car inside.
 
you got to park like this!!! I have a standard size/width 3 car garage. I manuevered it sideways in the 2 car area during my re-gears and lift/tires. Wasnt easy.

My opening is like just barley 7" and I hit the top of rack going in but it fits.

Gietting two cars in is another story. I have 2 car with one big door.
There is no way that my rig and the wifes pathy will fit together, I hate it.
It does not much matter because all of the kids crap dominate the garage anyway
 
When I was buying my house, I took the option of the 8' (height) garage door. Enough to fit in a lifted rig with rack on the top, although I have neither :rolleyes:. Now, as I am trying to working in the garage, I really regret that I did not take the other two useful options: (1) One wide garage door in lieu of two separate doors and (2) Remove the pillar between cars by using the cross beam support from the top.

[Edited] The cruiser is actually not too bad. My 07 Sienna is a lot bigger - about 1 foot longer and much wider too - I only have 1" clearance in on each side when I am getting in and out. The :princess: scratched both sides of the mirror on the very first day, and refused to park the van in ever since. I have been her parking attendant. :eek:

Wheel dollies work wonders for maneuvering your vehicle into position
for major wrenching. got mine at Northern some years ago for around
120 bucks. In a 24x24' dbl garage you can do a lot.

I actually had both 80s in there at the same time. Could barely walk b/w the cars.
 
I have a (advertised) 22'D x 27'W three car attached garage with three 8'W x 7'H doors. In the middle slot, on the back wall, I have a furnace & HWH with protecting pole in front in front of same that reduces the parking space in front of it to 18' of depth. Add to that, 2 pillars to support top beam across ceiling of garage. I believe the architect assumed that somebody with Yugos would live in this house! We only use 2 of the spaces, but it sucks just trying to get in regular sized cars, let alone trying to work on one with 2 cars inside. And with the pillars, I can't manuver much in any direction. With the ARB and the Kaymar with spare swingout, I cannot park the 80 in the middle slot and get from one side of the garage to the other with out having all 3 doors open and going outside.

Brian, I'd figure 22' depth minimum, with no obstructions and 11' minimum width per 80 sized vehicle for room to work on rig which allows for open car doors and closed garage doors. That's open space - no shelves or work bench intruding into that area. IMHO - YMMV

26x36 with two 8x10 doors. The cruiser fits great.
 
My 1st Cruiser does not fit in my garage with a 7' door but in reality it is only 82" clearance. It has a 4" lift with a roof rack and Hella Lights.

2nd Cruiser will just make it with maybe 1 to 2 inches to spare. It has a 4" lift but no roof rack or lights.

I would figure 2 feet on each side minimum to open doors plus the width of your vehicle. This would mean at least 10 feet in width.

However, 12 foot width would be better. That is what I have and it is a comfortable space for getting in and out of the vehicle.

Regarding depth. If your truck is stock, 20 foot is OK. A stock cruiser is just a hair under 16 feet. This gives you 2 feet to spare front and back.

If you truck is built, I would say 24 foot in depth is better. If not, 20 foot will do ... but it will get tight moving around the vehicle in the garage with of road bumpers on both ends and a spare tire mounted on the back.

I have a 20x22 attached garage with a 16x7 door. I actually only have about 18' of usable floor space from the left to the right walls. I can fit both cruisers in the garage and have space for a workbench that sits at the front of the garage (8x2). I also have a full size fridge in the corner where the 80 is parked in the picture below.

Keep in mind that the passenger side of the 80 is right up against the wall and you would not be able to walk down that way... there is enough space to get around the 100, but no way you can open the doors all the way... it fits, but it's not practical - so I just park my 80 outside :)
