A guy at work was talking about how to test shocks.

He said to drive the vehicle and put the IR heat sensor on the top part of the shock and the bottom should be the same temp. If they are then the shock is good.
He wasn't sure though. Is he right or way too far to the right in right field???

Sounds off to me, especially for the fronts as the top is in the engine compartment (hot)

push down on the bumper and let go, the truck should rise up to neutral and stop with good shocks, with worn shocks the bumper will pass neutral going high and then back to center or maybe even do a few up down cycles if they are very bad

i see, you are not about to bounce the bumper on a semi,

shockes generate heat as they cycle, not sure how that plays into diffrent temps as they age

Well, I just drove the new Peterbuilt (the wide one with the short hood. Its realy a cabover with a short hood) and it rides like sh#!. The suspension is too weak. As you drive down the road it rocks/sways side to side.
I got out and shook the truck and I could get it to rock like it was a bus full of kids, rocking it side to side. It just had new shocks put on.
I was glad to get back in the KW.

hey landtoy,
i was just curious to what is considered the "Ferrari" or i guess on this board the "land cruiser" of semis? Like what is the best you can get. One of my friends that drives a big rig said it was a Western Star cause they are hand built. Another said Peterbuilt. What chu think?

Western Star, I never drove one. My boss said they are "home made" what ever that means.

Peterbuilt is a Peterbuild. Its the name that "some" drivers want ( the ones that lower the seat to the floor and lean on the door. All you see is the top of their head as you pass them) Every Peterbuilt I have ever drove (execpt for one older one) is a piece of crap.
Volvo's are safe but haven't driven many.
BarnyardCadillac (International) are the cheapest. And they are made that way.
Henerybuilt (Ford/Sterling) some like them (at least if you own a Ford PU you will) I don't
Mack they make good construction vehicles.
FWD and Oshkosh make REAL 4WD trucks.
Kenworth is the KING OF THE ROAD. Enough said.

I've heard that old truckers never die.....

.... They just get a new Peter Built.

:D
