I'm looking at a '94 this weekend w/ 91k on the odometer. I've seen picks and it's one of the best one's I've seen in a while. I'm pretty familiar with the 60's but this will be my first (if I purchase it) 80. Seller is asking $12,500. Thoughts on price? Things to look for?

For that price I would hope it is mint and has factory lockers. Check the FAQ's lots of good info.. do a search many members have asked the same question.

Good Luck and Welcome.

Price seems high IHMO. Great mileage for a '94. Most will have double that mileage. Lockers will make it worth more tho.

Check out the FAQ in this 80's section for some good info and Slee Offroad's FAQ as well. You'll be better prepared when you go look this weekend.

Pictures can be decieving, i bought a 94 with 114k and the pictures looked great, but something fishy was going on, he didn't have a pink nor was it registered in his name, and i point out pin striping on it, the left front and rear fenders had the pin striping but the doors didn't and since i am anal about that crap i began to ask if it was in an accident and he said no. I bought it for 5300 after bargaining 3hours from 7k. Test drive it like you stole it, i went easy on it while test driving it. Take it to a local mechanic and pay a few bucks to have it inspected for errors, better to lose 50 bucks on an inspection. Better to do that then paying some thousands of dollars and finding out later something is wrong. Car fax would be good to, i got f***** again when i registered it to find out it was salvaged because a previous owner had it stolen and insurance company paid it off to only find it a few months later.

Damn! He said it wasn't in a accident.. yet it was salvaged? Damn that's a big time crook!

He doesn't say it was wrecked. Just that it was a salvage title because it has been stolen and paid off.

ALWAYS do a carfax on any car you plan to purchase.

I need glasses.

"A salvage title is often issued by states when a vehicle is damaged and the cost to repair is significant, many times it exceeds the market value of the vehicle. This may be associated with an insurance company declaring a vehicle a total loss. Sometimes these severely damaged vehicles are rebuilt, and issued a rebuilt or reconstructed title. In many states this requires an inspection. "

How the hell do you get a Salvaged title from it being stolen and later recovered? They must have beat the hell out of it.

When an insurance company compensates an insured for a total loss vehicle (which could be due to either total or near destruction, or loss or theft, of that vehicle), the insurance company "buys" that vehicle, and title passes to the insurance company. Some states require that the insurance company re-title the vehicle in some way so that there are no non-titled vehicles floating around). If the vehicle were stolen, and the insured was compensated for it, and then the vehicle shows up again, the insurance company could have given it a salvage title.

This could vary state by state depending on the laws in those states. In Alabama, for instance, a "total loss" is anything exceeding 75% of the book value of a vehicle, and the insurer must retitle the vehicle as a salvage vehicle within 30 days.

Edit: Don't worry about missing the "total loss" provision. That phrase is a term of art commonly referred to in shorthand as "totalled." It doesn't refer to the vehicle being lost in the sense of "misplaced."

I'm no expert, but I paid $7200 for my '94, 160,000 miles, and had to put about $1500 to get it back up to spec. I have no lockers, but if mine did, it seems like in the urban market it wouldnt have affected the price. I would keep looking or talk them down. cheers:D

Last month I paid $9k for a 1993 90k miles, 1 owner, fantastic body and factory lockers. I just did a knuckle rebuild to the tune of $1200 but I knew that when I bought it. I'm happy with it.

In general though it is going to be hard for you to get any reliable advice with our only info. being it is a '94 w/ 91k miles and the pic's look good.

I would agree with the others that, at first glance, the price is probably a bit high. Of course if it is immaculate and needs nothing then it might be well worth it. It's also likely that you can negotiate a bit on the price.

I paid 5k for a 94 with 148,000. I bought if from a co worker who had regular maintenance done. It is in pretty good shape....no lockers. I got it for a grand less than what he was going to ask on the open market. I have bought about $400 in parts to get it tuned and up to shape.

I'd flat out ask the guy if the CEL has been coming on. I'll bet that a lot of people who avoid mentioning will also tell the truth if directly asked. At the age of a 94, lots of them will have 02, EGR, or some other common code.

Also, I've got the same vehicle with about 120K on the meter. In my area, I figure mine is worth $7-8K.

Well as they say, love is bliss...and I'm in love. Aside from perfect interior and near perfect exterior, this is as good visually as they come. Brakes, rotors, belts, hoses, tires, batery, filters, etc. all new within the past 1500 miles. Records go back for 9 years on it. As far as I could tell, everything has been done within appropriate intervals except for a tranny service. No sign of fluid leaks. Clean title and reg. What am I missing?
