Drivetrain Conversion in Lafayette

I am living in Lafayette and I want to put a third gen LM7 into my 66 FJ40. I haven't decided on what transmission/ transfer case that I want to go with so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. The biggest problem that I am having as far actually doing the conversion is the fact that I don't have a garage or anywhere else to do the conversion. I also have never done anything like this before but I am willing to learn and if there is anyone in the Lafayette area that has experience with this type of conversion and is willing to help me out would be awesome.

Welcome  First off I'd say you found the right place MUD is an awesome resource and can save you alot of money in the process. The knowlledge here is extensive and in one way or another they've tried or built every combination you're probably looking at doing. I would have paid to have this site when I did my first 70 model.

Second you should make a club meeting when you get the chance. We have a club full of good folks that are very knowledgeable. Making a few friends that can help with advice, tools, part or lend a hand is worth being a part of. Not to mention you'll have alot of fun. Hopefully we'll get to meet and talk about your project.

tire question, the specs on a 12.5 wide tire say 9-11 wide rim, is it safe to run on 8 or 9 wide rim?

You wouldn't have any problems moutning a 12.5 wide tire on a x8 or x9 rim.

My rear main seal went out, not good .Off to Musson tomorrow .

:frown: sorry to hear that. Is that a 1 piece or 2 ? I just picked up a order from Mr Harold today thats some good folks there. Sorry I didn't get to stop yesterday was on the way to scoop up the boy and head to scout meeting.

I've always run my 12.5 tires on 8" rims with no bad results. The 8" rim usually helps when you air down fo not losing a bead.

I don't know if this was already posted but i used this site to find Toyota parts by using entering my VIN # ToyoDIY.com. It gave good looking drawings with part numbers. I not sure about the price list but the drawings looks good. Hope it helps.

anyone know the most backspace you can run on a 15" rim on the 3rd gen trucks?

the ideas that i have for my truck are going to push my tires out and i would like to keep from pushing them too far out there.

Got a potential issue...my rig won't start. The PO told me not to mess with using the alarm remotes as they will affect being able to start it. I have never used them and never had a problem. Last weekend, when we were taking out the carpet, we had to unscrew the button/wire that was in the plastic wall, and I am pretty sure that caused an issue. I had no trouble getting home last saturday, but when I tried to start the rig this morning it wouldn't start. Thought I had killed the battery, tried to jump it but that was not the problem. It eventually started up...this evening I got nothing I messed with it for about 2 hours and even called Paul. He said to try and "jump" it at the starter (which means nothing to me), but I am going to try and do what he walked me through tomorrow morning. As for now, everything is cleaned and put back in, it just won't start. I have no idea what to do it the "jumping" thing doesn't work, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

i used to be a decent electronics tech....I will help you if you need it....(I have the week off and don't have much else going on).

Eric. what works radio ,horn lights so on .I bet its the alarm if it don`t start .

Is the solenoid on the LC's attachedd or external? If it's external, you should be able to turn the key on and jump the solenoid with a screwdriver. Can you push start it?

its the alarm start disable, had this problem with my old s10 cause the guy had lost his remotes.

there should be a button to press under the dash somewhere that will allow you to start it, if they didnt install it which some people that do it them selves do not, then you are going to have to find the wiring for the alarm and there is a plug that you can jumper and never have the problem again.

i ended up having to do that to my s10

Sounds like the valet switch might have tripped or shorted when fooling with the panel they usually put those in the dash or kick panel. I'd disconnect the damn alarm its not like your harboring 10 gorillas and a 30 inch plasma inside  I thought that was just for the LX's :p
