I've run across a problem I can't find much about in the Tech forum. I just put the tub back on my 71 FJ40 and have discovered a clearance problem with the Hi-Lo shifter on top of the tcase. I have the 3-speed tcase mounted to a 4-speed tranny so it sits about 3 inches rearward of the stock position. This positions the top lever so it hits the cross brace under the passenger floorboard. It doesn't look like I can bend the brace where it contacts the top of the lever without seriously bending the floorboard. I've looked for ways to "adjust" the height of the tranny/tcase but the engine mount on that side is cranked all the way down and I have a brand new body mount kit installed. Anyone solved this problem without taking a cutting wheel to the brace?

Thanks for your help.

Jon

Jon did you post this in the 40 section ?

1" body lift.

Yep, somebody suggested taking a cutting disc to it...I think Tom put him up to it....:D

Hey Jon,
A relay will fix it! :D

Hook him up with a custom relay and solenoid to make it the first "electronic shift" 3-speed case! Awesome idea! :steer:

seriously though, Jon, I have no idea.

did you put the body mounts in between the frame and tub ?

I understand you don't want to cut into it.

Just beat it out of the way with a big :censor: hammer! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Give me a call I'm good with a hammer.

Yup, sure did. It's because the 4 speed tranny is 3 inches longer so the tcase sits farther back, causing the lever to hit the cross brace instead of pivoting within the nice bump out in the passenger floor board.

Not being able to see the situation, would a twin stick solve the clearance problem?

don't think it would.

but I've had the cutting torches out practicing so you have the cutoff wheel, sawzall and torch option. I'm sure Chris and Bob will help :hillbilly:

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: RUN AWAYYYYYYYYYY! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I'm glad I've moved her to an undisclosed bunker...I'm sure Bob will be glad to solve my tcase issues by dropping it on top of a large rock (the whole truck that is).

Chris - No sure about this, but visions of Thor pop into my mind at your suggestion....does your hammer have a name? I'm sure Tom has a pet name for his cut-off wheel too....

Can you bend the linkage to go around the rib, or drill a hole through the rib.

If it was Dave's, you wouldn't need either of the T case shifters.

It's not as easy as it sounds because of the flat spot on the shaft but how about making a new one that is clocked to miss the brace. Then twin sticks.
