The open side of the seal would face the transmission David.

Could you please post up an example of 'trans' being used in reference of the tcase....

Quoted his statement, it is kleer. ;)

All out of belly button lint Dave?

How is your shoulder?

I need a pic of the seal, I always though the seal was to keep oil IN the tcase.

which means that the open part goes towards the tcase.

Is this seal mounted in the tranny or tcase?

I have been wrong before tho
Ask Pinhead ;)

The seal is mounted in the tcase......

Chassis and body manual shows it, as have the 60+ cases I have seperated with the open side of the seal towards the transmission...

Hey, I'm just trying to make sure I understand, along with other, more shy and future readers, Steve. I checked, and the 3 speed F manuals do indeed show the spring toward the transmission, although I needed special "magic" glasses to see it, and it wasn't mentioned at all in the text. It was only shown in figure 2-69, and you cannot tell at all from the exploded view.

My shoulder is 3 months into a 12 month rehab. It still keeps me awake most nights, thanks for asking!

I know. Yes, I've split 3x, but I never remembered how they came out. Or, someone else put them back together. Anyway, I'm sure I have them pointed the wrong way on both of my rigs now.

thank you so much i have been trying for days to figure out how to get that damn thing off, :) thanks mate

Here is what I copied and used...guess there are many ways to split that duo....I prefer it falling apart!!

Cheers!

Poser: My mechanic will be rebuilding my tranny and transfer case using Trail Tamer kits. These kits include new bearings. I picked up a used front output shaft housing as mine has cracked around the mounting bolt holes and been welded. My question is this; "The output shaft housing is aluminum. Should the housing be heated to 150 degrees in an oven prior to removing and installing the bearing race?" This is common with motorcycle cases. It is no big deal with iron pieces, like front hubs but aluminum is usually heated prior to removal in my experience.

No need to heat the housing; the bearing race will drive out with a punch just fine.

The Beast will come home Monday, on a tow truck, sans assembled transmission and transfer case. There are a couple of problems, both being addressed. There are three nuts in the transfer case kit from Terrain Tamer, and they are 20mm x 1.50 thread whereas my rig has 19mm X 1.50. Of course no one makes anything other than 18 & 20. However, contacted Terrain Tamer in Australia and they knew what was up immediately and put the nuts in post this morning to my daughter in St. Louis. That is some fantastic customer support. There is a shift fork "outside" the transfer case that had been broken and welded and needed further attention. I said no and have another one sourced. There is also a bearing in the kit that didn't match up, however, once again Terrain Tamer came through with the information. Apparently this bearing never changed and apparently my shaft had been damaged and re-sized and a bearing found that would work. So I'm not quite sure what to do there, but having everything home, unassembled, I will be able to do a 100% part check and look at any other issues that don't pass muster. The mechanic was going to re-assemble with a mix match of new and old/bad parts and I told his boss I don't want that kind of work done. He understood. I have a new wiring harness on the table so I can mess with that while awaiting parts arrival. Clearly we will exceed one year without getting it registered.

Anyone have a picture of where the spacers go on the shaft, there are 2 of them with the 2 gears
