The owners manual of my 2001 4 Runner calls for 75W-90 for the front differential and transfer case, 80W-90 for the rear diff. Are there any downsides/harm done if I put 80W-90 in everything? This is my daily driver so I am just curious. I stopped at the quick lube today and they said they don't carry the 75W-90 and recommend using the same in all. $40 for each...ouch. And they wanted to sell me the limited slip additive for $10 extra each. I don't have it so is there any real reason, are they trying to up the ante or are they just ignorant?

I would imagine your front diff calls for a less viscous lube due to the lack of typical use. I am not sure when they began citing different specs for the diffs. My truck (92) calls for the same in each.

Regarding limited slip, if you do not have it, it seems silly to have it suggested.

Try to avoid those "quick lube" places; I did notice once that T recommends the 75W-90 for front diffs that are equipped w/ADD. BTW, for what those guys are charging, you could DIY w/ expensive synthetic gear oil and still have $$ left over. I put 75W140 in my '91 mini 4x4 diffs and they seem to work fine, though it's possible I'm getting slightly poorer mileage.

Good info. I usually do it myself but I drive this for work and the company pays for all gas and repairs plus a monthly allowance so I let them pay for it. I do all my own stuff on my 40 because I enjoy it and it is a hobby.

Edit: just spoke to local T dealer and it's $80 for all 3

I work on these things for a living, and worked at a yota dealer for 6 years. And I will tell you that as far as I can remember I have always just used 80-90 in all manual trans, transfers and diffs. The dealer i worked at only stocked 80-90 in bulk and I have never seen a problem with it.

The LSA that the "quick-lube" place recommended is rediculous. Go with 80-90 in the diffs and case and you will be fine.
