Tank Recall Replacement Problem

Typically warranty work doesn't pay as well as normal repairs. That's the way it works with the domestics anyway.

Service or lack of it will doom Toyota just like it did G.M. I owned many Fords and G.M s and then I found someone who gave service, I never went back. We all laughed at the Korean cars when they first arrived, no one is laughing at them now. Mike

I just had mine done two weeks ago. The local dealer wanted to charge me $65 for cutting off two of the bolts securing the bracket under the tank and replacing them, but in the end they did not. PO had left an exhaust leak go, which rotted out the strap on that side, in addition to distorting the bolt heads.
It was nice to get some necessary labor done by someone else for no charge, and a new gas tank to boot.

I had my tank and seat belts done at Salem Toyota they didn't charge me anything but they didn't rinse out the new tank before they installed it. It stopped running after about 90 miles and had to get it towed back to the dealership from albany they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it when they looked at it. I had to drain the tank and change the fuel filter a few times. Haven't had any issues since. I wouldn't take it back there to have any work done on it if my like depended on it.

I didn't report it. I was just trying to get my cruiser working again and pissed at the dealership. I guess I should have just didn't get around to it.

You should call or write Toyota on behalf of the next poor bastard that trusts them with a simple task. I'm going to leave them a followup message whenever this is over. I still have a sick feeling about it like I made a gigantic mistake.

They didn't get done today. Hopefully tomorrow. I don't want to press them too much because I'm already afraid of the work they're doing under there. What is it, 6 bolts, 2 fuel lines, fill lines and vapor lines. No sway bar in the way. I'm sure something will get screwed up.

Got the truck back today. I see they installed 4 new bolts on the tire mount and that appears to be the only extra work/parts done. Tank looks fine, I'll drain it to make sure it isn't full of crap. Glad to have it home.

they may have been lying and trying to double dip
(wouldn't be surprised), but it states EXPLICITLY in the recall that Toyota will pay for something like 3.8 hours of labor or something.
it also states any time above and beyond that, or replacemant of rusted parts, is the resposnibility of the vehicle owner...

now: if it is the Toyotas dealer's fault that their employees are young, under-trained, under-paid, over-worked, and take too much time to do a (relatively) easy procedure or if they break things due to inexperience: then that should be covered by the dealer, not the vehicle owner.

but, sadly, after finding out that a very large Chevy/GM/Caddy dealer currently pays its mechanics by commission (the faster it gets done the more they make:hhmm:), and if no cars come in for service they sit in the service garage and COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT (while at work), paid in part by the rest of us, any and all trust for any vehicle dealer or service department went well and far out the window forever!!!!

congrats on busting their balls and getting them to do what they are legally required to do! its like an insurance claims person...if they can un-convince at least on person not to follow up on what they are owed, they see this as a positive outcome...

my local dealership tried to charge me to remove my anti reversal shakles cause they couldn't get the tank past them 150.00 " bulls**t i'll be right there " I had to remove the tank for them took me about 4 min. to drop it past the shakle bolts ......... busted the mech. balls the whole time what do i know i'.m just a dumb carpenter ......... my .02

Ditto on talking directly to Toyota. I had the same problem, and had to talk to Toyota's customer service. I ended up with a free oil change and lube plus no charge for the tank replacement.

TK

Give me the number....... I'll have my wife call them for ya! She always gets her way and then a ton of free crap too.:princess:

Rear outboard seat belt retractors is on recall....as well as the fuel tank and assembly parts.

I think the fuel tank is over 33 parts total for the entire recall as it replaces tank, mounting hardware, hoses, tubing, etc.

Mine has been running great...my only problem is the half a tank of fuel they took out of old tank disappeared and I was stuck refilling the new tank up as they only gave me 1 gallon to get me to gas station. LOL

Yeah I did say something.....so next time I go in they are going to hook me up. Told them I never had problem with gunk in tank so even if they drained off all but final 1/2 gallon and gave it back to me it would have been okay. I was guessing they all topped off a tank or two that night as most dont question it.

Im sure mine has not been done, even though it had been recorded as so.

Bumping this because I want to look into getting it done.

Want to read more stories so I have more courage to argue with them if they refuse/give me a hard time about it. lol

WooHoo!

Just called Toyota Customer Service and turns out it hasnt been done.

Now its off to butt heads with the dealer...
