Good afternoon,

i might have a chance to go to Rota Spain for my next set of orders with the navy and if i go i will take my 60. Is there anyone who has experience with this or anyone in Spain right now who might have some more insight on how this works.

Hey, you're in Port Hueneme? Us too! We just moved from Gitmo and we have an FJ-62. Wife works at NCIS. If you see a red 62 outside, go look her up.

Better yet, send us a PM with your phone #. Don't know about Rota specifically but we do know about moving a Cruiser to/from overseas.

Jeff

sweet. like i said i dont know for certain if i am going but thinking out loud and i am totaly excited at the prospect of going over seas.

I spent a month in Rota last year for work also with the USN. You'll have a great time. Rota is also a great launching point for visiting the rest of Europe with is easily accessible via Ryanair.

Sorry, but don't have any experience with transporting a vehicle overseas but do know that gasoline is ridiculously expensive over there.

worried about the gas prices too, almost not sure what i want to do with the cruiser, half says take it half says get something better on gas. 50 / 50 right now.

What are the fuel prices inthe area you'll be stationed?

Does the base have a fuel station?

Years ago when i was in, sometimes a bases fuel station would have cheaper fuel...sort of a Costco, but you couldn't cancel your membership:lol:

Don't know what you do so, how much shore time are you going to have and how often do you think you'll drive her?

If it's sporadic, I'd take it and save your $$ for when your ashore.

Depending too on where you'll be billited, DD may or may not be an issue.

Enjoy the assignment and thanks for your service:beer::beer::beer:

What are the fuel prices inthe area you'll be stationed? NOT SURE ON PRICES YET, HEARD THEY ARE OVER 3.50 A GALLON

Does the base have a fuel station? YES THE BASE DOES AND IT IS CHEAPER BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE HERE IN THE STATES IT IS ONLY A FEW CENTS

Don't know what you do so, how much shore time are you going to have and how often do you think you'll drive her? I AM A STEEEL WORKER SO I WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, AND IF I CAN I WILL RIDE MY BIKE TO AND FROM EACH DAY

If it's sporadic, I'd take it and save your $$ for when your ashore.

The base does have a gas station and pricing is based on a ration that is given to those stationed in Rota. Permanently stationed personnel are alloted a certain number of gallons (or liters) of gas per month at the "good deal" Navy Exchange prices.

If you use more than your ration of gas then you can still buy gas there but you are paying the out of control Euro prices.

Do it the other way round! Pick up a diesel cruiser there (lots of them around), and bring it back.

Remember the gas is different in there, you have to change the fuel system when you get there. It is a good idea to bring a expedition vehicle to Europe because there is many places to explore, the northern part of Spain on the Pyrenees and the north west Galicia and Asturias are beautiful places with many trails to explore and camp.

Please explain the gas is different there? and what has to be changed, i m running a chevy 350 1988 tbi nothing fancy

thanks

I concur w/Jan...given the cash, I'd leave the 60 here and buy a euro-spec turbo-diesel 80 and bring it back stateside. IIRC, they are import-eligible.

Hi chappy, my names Adam, I live about 35km east of malaga (Velez Malaga). After reading the thread about you planning on bringing your fj60 to Spain, i agree with the other members about leaving your rig in the US, you´ll be able to purchase a hdj80 12v euro spec diesel for between 9 -12000€ and be able to ship it back when you leave. Nobody runs petrol rigs here to expensive! Plus we prefere the reliablity of diesels. Drop me a line when you´re here, will help you out in any way i can. That goes
for any other cruiserheads out there.
Fuel prices are currently 1,10€ litre off diesel, about the same for petrol.
I´m currently running a hj61, 12ht manual, 33 x 10,50 x 16 being prep´d for an 8 month overland
trip around africa starting Dec 2010. Also a HJ60 + another hj61 for spares.
Will be starting a thread on the prep soon.
We are a large group of fanatics living here, so you shouldn´t have a problem meeting people.

Adam,
thanks man, i am thinking about leaving the rig, from what i was told though the only way i can ship a truck back is if ship one over, just what i heard so i am not 100 percent positive on this one.

going diesel is the way to go agreed. what would be the possibility of dropping a 12ht and manual trans in place of my 350 chevy and 700r. i am totally not scared of the work but i will not be brining my full tool box and welder and such because of the power supply difference between the US and Spain.

What will you do if you find a nice Fj Diesel? leave yours there? Or can you bring both back?

i would leave mine there, i have no problem there. i guess the first thing i need to do is get there. lololol

thought about selling mine before i leave so i can by another one there. who knows yet.

Or you could trade. There's got to be some wacked out Germans that want a V8 powered Fj.:D

i was thinking the same thing, trade, not everyone has a v8
