Yes they have a good following in the tacoma-type truck market. There is also a great product from Trekboxx.

I decided to go with the Huracan Fab cover as it is actually a tailgate storage unit. So with the tailgate folded down, you can flip a flap up and store light/soft items in it. Its not a whole lot more expensive for the benefit you get. I also see you are in TX. This Huracan is an Australian product but they have a shop in North Richland Hills build and distribute them in the US. I got mine in literally a Day since I am in Dallas.

could try making your own for a fraction of the cost.
To me, this is reliant on

A. Having the tools already
B. Hardware cost
C. Skill

The reality is, to match the quality of the trekboxx at $200 you'd need a half sheet of Baltic birch $30-50, a can of monstaliner $50, all the hardware (for I believe 13 holes) including well nuts probably $30-40. At this point you are in $110 to $140. To match the quality of the trekboxx or mountain hatch you'd need to have a router to chamfer/round the edges. A really good saw for clean cuts, etc. The time it would take to do all this is worth the extra $60. Time is worth something, and 3-4 hours of work on something like this is really what it would take to make it nice. Sure you could use cheaper wood, cheaper finish, etc, but then you sacrifice a ton of quality. If you are good making that sacrifice go for it.

Also if you don't have the tools its just not realistic.

i mean yea...i was going to just get hdpe or whatever the cutting board material and cut it it fit. i don't care for the storage as much currently. my carpet is actually fine for now too so it's very low priority to me. I know it won't be as nice as mountain hatch but 🤷‍♂️

If you decide to go this route, you may want to check in the group buy section about this product, some here have had their bolts that came with the Huracan rust, so if your in a rainy or humid area, you might want to get stainless hardware.

If this was back before they had a US distributor, those also came from australia, i.e. a week plus on a boat at sea....

These are now made and distributed in Texas. Hardware looked high quality to me, but a good point. I'll keep an eye on mine.

The good news is they are literally just nuts and bolts, no well nuts.

@LXPlore has one on his LX still I believe. Wanna say that I saw another member put one on but can't remember who.

I do not recommend the Mountain Hatch cover. Want to buy mine?

That's like a REALLY easy fix, and stops the cover from rattling on the tailgate anyways haha. Kidding around, but a fair point, and not an ideal response from the manufacturer

I don't disagree that it's an easy fix and I'd say that this design oversight wouldn't be an issue with a 100-centric vendor (like Trekboxx).
Agree on that count 100%

That was me. Hurrican is junk, IMHO. Junky latches, crappy hardware, poor design.

I really enjoy mine, latches are great, fit and finish is awesome. Maybe a QC issue?

It takes a serious craftsman to out-fabricate a proper CNC. I can't do it. Rounded corners, recessed hardware, etc... Lots of simple stuff you just can't do in a typical home shop and that can be pretty limiting when it comes to the overall fit and finish of something like this. Even if it looks like a simple flat board at first.

This all said.... watch out for an Air Down Gear Up cover in the near future. ;)

"Maybe a QC issue"?

Uh, right.... Latches are loose as crap (QC? No). Bolts are rusty (QC? Again, no) Carpeting is getting thin after 2 years (Also nope, factory original carpet from 2000 was fine when I took it off).

It's just a crappy product built to a price point to be cheaper than the other guys' stuff. You get what you pay for.
