Hey Guys____ I have an 85 runner with a 22re, 5 sp. that had the engine””” professional rebuilt”””. In the morning when I start the truck, there is a “loud ticking” from the engine compartment ,like the engine needs oil, than after about 5 –8 seconds it goes away. Then in the course of the day if left for periods of say longer than 2 or three hours I’ll hear the sound BUT not as long or pronounced. It just doesn’t sound normal to me. Could it be the timing chain, and if it is WHY it is so loud, other Toyotas I’ve had NEVER sounded like that. BEFORE I go back and talk to the shop I wanted some feedback from you guys, so I’m not completely in the dark before talking to the shop. Thanks in advance _______ BAYRUNNER

This is the timing chain slapping around under the cover, until oil pressure builds up and the tensioner can get the slack out of the chain. It's probably also valve train noise as the valve timing is going to be way off. This is most often caused by running an inferior oil filter with no anti-drainback valve. When you shut the engine off, the filter gradually drains dry, so when you start it again later, the first thing the oil pump has to do is fill the filter back up, then the engine gets full oil pressure. Switching to a Toyota OEM oil filter may help, especially if you have a Fram filter on there now. Fram filters SUCK.

It could also indicate that the tensioner is wearing out, or the oil pump is getting tired. Mine was really noisy at startup until last summer, when I finally pulled the head for PM on the headgasket. New turbo oil pump, new timing chain set, new tensioner, DOA Racing steel timing chain guides, new cam, new SS valves. Very quiet now.

Could simply be a valve rocker a couple thousandths out of adjustment. One thing you can do is take a 2' piece of garden hose and use it as a stethoscope to find just where the ticking is coming from. Hold one end in your ear and move the other end around the valve cover and timing chain cover. (Don't shred your hand on the fan.) Should be obvious if it's the timing chain area versus a lifter.

Mine does that. Did it a lot worse before I put a new set of rod bearings in. I don't have much history on mine, but I'm sure the oil pump is getting a little tired. I also have overall low oil pressure, not alarmingly, but low. Also, I only use Toyota oil filters. And am running 10-40 oil.

It could also be the cold start injector sounding off as you said you had an E moter. Chance!

2nd on the exhaust leak...have heard that 22re's are notorious for stripping the exhaust manifold studs on the head. Mine would be loud at startup, then as things heated up and expanded the noise would go bye bye.

Helicoil kit fron Napa and a right angle drill, problem solved.

Carquest brand filters are made by WIX and have the drain back stop built in, my advice is when you start the truck don't touch the gas let the oil pressure get up, I would consider bringing it back to the person who rebuilt it and tell him it is ticking. It's a 22RE it is the only toyota gas motor I would own.

Get a mechnical oil pressure gauge and see what she is at when hot.

good luck
