So, have any of you guys put lower gears in your cases?

I have to re-build a case and it would be a good time to throw some lower gears in it.

I was reading that the 8% under drive of the AA gears puts it in at 3.05 which would be cool.

I was also over at Marlin and saw 4.70 Transfer Case Gear Kits but from the overview it does not say for what cases its for, but the install has it for minis and 4runners...So, i dont evn know if thats an option yet.

What I really need to do is call both companys and have a chat.. But for now I was just wondering what the rest of the 60's crew was using...

If the only option turns out to be the gears from AA how much slower will 3.05 feel?
the best way I could describe it would be...would the 3.05s feel more like 4.11s or 4.88s ??

thanks,

run the math. And currently, I think the only one making lower gearsets for a cruiser is Marks out of AU. And they cost a TON with little benefit.

Better bet is a doubler of some sort. 203/toybox etc...

Yikes and i just noticed the gear set prices......screw that...

8% underdrive should change the 3.73 gearing to an effective 4.03 at the rear axle. I think the AA units are Marks gears?

This combo should work well for a 3.73 with 2F.

I was hoping to run this setup in my 80 with its H55F..But with this price, I will just re-gear the diffs.

There are not cheap .. but with Marks ( AA is a dealer, same thing as MAF and others ) underdrive gears .. wouu ..

4.56 R&P and with Marks I have enough power to run 39.5" right now with 37" and my poor 2H engine ..

4.56 x 8% = 4.92 :grinpimp: and the low .. well other thing .. :D

Haha, Ok, my bad. screw it...i'll just re-gear.

I'm going to do a 203 doubler. Should end up around $1k before driveshaft mods. The marlin box is nice but it is somewhere around $1700, plus you need to swap the output shaft out which basically means a tranny rebuild.

That plus 4.88's should get me close to 90:1.

I already had to rebuild the H55F and t-case, plus needed to go back up to 3.70's, so the Marlin Toybox made sense to me.

There are benefits to a doubler vs. a re-geared case and vice versa, it all depends on what your budget it.

Why did you have to go back up to 3.70s?

Doubler is in the cards for me eventually ;)

Hi henry :)

I had to go to 3.70's because the Cummins 4BT likes to run at low RPMs, and I need to be able to haul ass at 75 MPH comfortably; I live in central TX, it takes 8-10 hours in every direction just to leave the state.

Hey, Mace! How's the "chopper" coming along?! :)

Is comming :)

Almost got it ready to start the motor :)

I have the Marks 1:08 and 3:05 in Poo. I do not think it is a waste, depending on your intended use. If you want a general wheeler, with some extra lowrange, to run some 35"s, 4:11's (for ease of replacement)...the Marks is an option imo. The 3:05 lowrange is noticable, as is the 1:08. I had to go back to 4:11 from 4:56 so freeway driving was not such a pain.

I am waiting on the Marlin Canadian order for his H55F Toybox, but am not likely at this point to put it in Poo, as I found I did not need 1st, lowrange, often at all.

Your tire/gearing/intended trail will be the best guage of what will work for you.

The bling of the Marlin will be nice though :D

I've sold and installed a half dozen of the sets in the past few years... seems that everyone is happy with them overall, but in a 60, I would do a Toybox in a heartbeat as you have plenty of driveline length.

I plan to do the Marks gears in my 40 sooner or later, I run the H55F, 4.88's and love it on the road, but I would like to have a little lower low range and I don't have the length for a Toybox.

There was a second company out of AU that was working on a lower range (than the Marks, something like 3.6:1) but they never came to light? Rockhopper?

Hey Henry .. !

I thought that you can go with 4.11 and 37" :grinpimp: and get good top speed at low rpm.. anycase I go to check first 35" with 4.11 in highway with th 4BT.

Que paso, David?!

I ran the numbers and spoke to others that have done similar conversions, and pretty much everyone agreed that the highest diff gears would be best for long-range cruising at highway speeds at or above 75 MPH. I'll be running 35's to start with (can't afford the 37's until the spring), so I'll be able to give you better feedback once the beast is running.

I'm pretty sure that we are still awayting for the pics .. ! :D

I have a special gif ( not gift :D ) for this threat until you post here the pics about the progress of your Princess ..
