If I understand the mounting correctly, are the same bolts that mount the fairlead the ones that mount the winch? If that is the case, are you concered about how securely the winch is mounted with that big "plastic bushing" in the middle?

when you're pulling, you are pulling against the face though, right? So the "big plastic bushing" has very little load on it...

Does it need to be that slippery? I use a lot of Delrin, fairly slick and much stronger.

Agreed, but what about bouncing down the road and having the winch work loose over time?

I'd need some closer pics, but I'm sure you could put metal sleeves in the plastic holes and washers to hold the plastic plate on. Teflon, nylon, delrin are very easy to work with other than the clamping, it wouldn't be difficult.

Scott, I understand what you are saying, but I'm going based on what the fairlead manufacturers are saying about the self-lubricating properties of UHMW etc.

Cdan, yeah, metal sleeves are in the forecast. There is no way it's working loose in the near future though, that is one thing I know.

All I know is that thing is fugly. :flipoff2:

I am not posting a pic of my hack job 8274 retrofit in mine. ::)

FWIW, when I mounted my winch I welded in a heavy angle iron for a bottom winch mount. I did not trust just pulling against the bumper front. It's working out well now as I'm mounting a aftermarket power steering cooler to the angle iron.

Lets do a bit of painting while that thing is swinging in the breeze, shall we?
it gets deformed with only 3/4".
What part deforms? UHMW is usually too soft to use unsupported. It's also pretty soft for holding up your winch, it probably will compress and loosen the mounting bolts.

For something like this I'd use a few more screws, especially along the bottom. Could you just drill out the countersinks for the hex bolt heads to socket wrench clearance, and mount the UHMW with maybe eight 1/4-20 flat-head cap screws? The more screws the better, although you'll have to cut into your pretty bumper :princess: I don't have a winch, so I'm not sure if you have space behind the bumper for nuts and access with a tool. If you can't get a tool in there maybe you can make a nut plate, a plate with threaded holes, makes it much easier to assemble stuff like this. 1/2" or 3/4" UHMW should be plenty thick if you support it well with screws.

It's mounted with 4 7/16 fine thread hex bolts right now anchored into the winch mounting holes. It is solid. The 3/4" that Sky make have bowed out under pressure, so I doubled the thickness.

You need to remember that this is nothing more than a sleeve for the rope to pass through and yes, the countersinks are the perfect size for the socket to fit in to tighten the bolts. :princess:

I can see why the sky fairlead bowed, you could probably bend UHMW that thick with your hands. A row of screws through it and the bumper would keep it from bending, it wouldn't even need to be that thick. Another possibility is to router or mill out the back, leaving a lip that sticks into the fairlead opening in the bumper. Sort of like a flanged bushing, only rectangular. The bumper would then support the UHMW all the way around. The flange part could be very thin then.

Yeah, that's the way this is milled. There's about 1/16" that goes through the fairlead.

Anyone make a UHMW hawes fairlead now?

Sorry to open an old thread. But I am wondering if anyone is selling a high quality UHMW hawes fairlead now that would fit right onto a ARB bumper? Would make myself, but I don't have the right tools for this one...

Why not just use the thermoplastic rollers?

Aww, so how I am supposed to mount up this sweet piece of recycled Mountain Dew cans?

I have a ARB-specific hawse alloy fairlead. It looks similar to yours, CodyRx7. You can search my M8000 winch install for pics, or my site.

I built one almost an exact copy of Junks. The only tools necessary for the task was a drill press with forester bits and a router for final cleaning. But be prepared it is to tough shiznit to work with but I have been super pleased with the end product and like not having that extension piece being on the front of my truck.
