Hi guys, I’m doing a complete axel rebuild soon, and the one part I’m a little unsure of is setting the preload on the swivel hub/kingpin bearings using the shims. How important is it to get exact? Will I be safe using the old shims? Any advice on how to do this process and why it’s important would be appreciated, I just like to know things in a bit more detail before I do them.
Thanks in advance

I'm actually in the middle of a rebuild right now. Whoever did this previously did a lot of things wrong, so I have ordered some new parts and I'm waiting for them to come in. I have only torn down the passenger side so far, but there were no shims on mine, top or bottom. Cruiser Outfitters website says that 80s do not need replacement shims. Am I ok assuming that I do not need shims, or do I need to order shims and rebuild to spec?

Do any of y'all have the FSM?

Some trucks have shims, some don't. It was a machining tolerance issue from what my failing memory remembers.
If you had shims then reuse them on the same side they came from. If you didn't, then don't.

My 91 had shims, my 97 does not. The wheels haven't fallen off yet.

I went through a lot of trouble trying to follow the fsm and it ended up that the pre-load was perfect when I re-used the old shims it was almost perfect.

Thanks for the input guys, Guess it’s back on with the old shims then. Also I do have a service manual but it’s broken up into a load of different documents in my Dropbox, any section you were after mate?

It's for you. The FSM details the front trunnion bearing preloads and shims. As long as its the FSM and not a Chiltons or other.
